Metal / Ancient dark faiths rise to subsume Earth
« on: November 15, 2013, 03:20:54 PM »
If Vikings were here today, the sounding of a distinctive horn in York would have created chaos.

The ancient instrument, blown last night, signalled exactly 100 days until the end of the world, according to Norse mythology.

Legend has it that the Norse God, Heimdallr, would blow the mythical Gjallerhorn to warn of the Viking apocalypse, also known as 'Ragnarok'.

“The moot is an ancient tradition. It is essentially a meeting. In times gone by, it would be the time when all the people in the village came together to decide how they were going to divide up all the crops and what they were going to spend money on and so on.

“That is why we have things like moot halls, or town halls today,” he says.

“Paganism is an umbrella term, so just like there are different denominations of Christianity, the same applies to Paganism.”

Metal / Svart Records releasing Demilich 3LP

Demilich: 20nd Adversary of Emptiness 3LP

https://www.facebook.com/svartrecords?filter=3

Dear you,

You may have heard the plans of Demilich's demo compilation have changed. If not, here are the announcements and pieces of info:

"From naivety to sheer intelligence.
From unimaginative to groundbreaking.
From amateurish to... well, less amateurish.
It will finally be available as one. Everything Demilich has ever recorded.
Demilich: 20th Adversary of Emptiness 3LP. Winter 2013."

"Let's make this official; The Demilich demo compilation will not only be a demo compilation, but will also include Nespithe. Everything we've recorded, from 1991 to 2006, in one package, with old and new artwork, available this year as a 3-LP and 2-CD. Both through Svart Records."

"The three vinyls included will be named this way: Nespithe; V34ish6ng 0f emptiness; Em9t2ness of van2s1ing."

"Dunno about the vinyl coloring, we'll be talking about that with Svart later."

"I thought the best way to get this all out is to release everything in the same package. I suppose including Nespithe doesn't add much price to it, and after all, it will be remastered (with good taste) from the original studio DAT, whereas every single Nespithe release before this has been done from the 16-bit CD version which was mastered in 1993."

"The packaging hasn't been set, yet. Most probably a box set, and possibly with Nespithe in its own jacket, and the other two in a gatefold jacket. Nespithe may have the original artwork. We'll let you know more when we know more."

...

Anyway, you once left your email address on our pages hoping to get a totally different product. There was supposed to be a demo compilation 2-LP, autographed, and limited to 397 copies. Well, things have changed.

However, we (Demilich+Svart) decided to ask if you'd still want a special edition. We would print and sell it ONLY to those who originally added their addresses on our web pages, and only to those who commit to buying it. The commitment won't be the kind of "you sign and you buy or Igor will chop your fingers off" commitment, but still, if you tell about your will to buy this one, we expect you to buy it. Otherwise we'll end up having lots of special edition sets to burn on a bonfire. Remember that this one will never be sold to anyone else but you who got this email. There will be anything from 500 to 1500 copies, but we expect it to be less than 1000.

We don't have facts about how the special edition will differ from the normal LP set. The price should be the same, or if it's notably more expensive to print, it'll only be slightly more expensive to you. We don't even know what the normal set will cost, so please don't ask. Just speculate, if that's what you like to do. Anyway, it'll be different, and will be a rarity. We'll most probably number it, and three original members of Demilich will autograph them all.

So, think about this for a moment. We'll collect the addresses for a couple of weeks and see if there's the demand. If not, there won't be any special edition.

If you think you want to commit to buying the thing, please head to the address below, and fill in the exact address that you originally gave (and which received this email.) That's all you have to do for now. We'll let you know more later.

HEAD HERE: http://www.anentity.com/demilich/thespecialedition.php

Yours,
Antti Boman, the benign dictator of Demilich

Motorhead's Lemmy has had a pacemaker fitted, but vows to keep touring, saying he wants to die "doing what I do best."

The 67-year-old rocker - real name Ian Fraser Kilmister - was warned by doctors he had to have the device fitted if he ever wanted to tour again after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, brought on by years of drink and drug abuse.

Metal / Monkey-Human Ancestors Got Music 30 Million Years Ago

Music skills evolved at least 30 million years ago in the common ancestor of humans and monkeys, according to a new study that could help explain why chimpanzees drum on tree roots and monkey calls sound like singing.

Metal / Slayer's Tom Araya on Texas secession
« on: November 11, 2013, 04:15:23 AM »
Tom Araya loves Texas. The singer/bassist for metal band Slayer should, seeing that he's lived here for 18 years.

"It's a very resourceful state. We could cut ourselves off from the rest of the country and we wouldn't have to be a part of the whole government mess," Araya says speaking from his ranch in north Texas.

At home and away from the noise of amps and screaming metal maniacs, Araya raises cattle. Some people in his community know what he does for a living and don't bother him for autographs. Others don't, and he likes that just fine, too.

"I like Texas because everything is here. We grow our own," he says. "Agriculture, gas, water, it's all here."

Metal / Napalm Death in South China Morning Post
« on: November 10, 2013, 01:04:45 PM »
Arguably the world's most extreme musical genre was born in the mid-1980s when heavy metal collided with hardcore punk and gave birth to the grossly mutated offspring known as grindcore.

Grindcore took the distorted, downtuned guitars of heavy metal, the incredibly fast drumbeats and political lyrics of hardcore punk, added demonic growls and shrieks as vocals, put everything into an industrial-sized blender and turned it onto 11.

Metal / Metal fans' personality traits
« on: November 08, 2013, 11:01:37 PM »
Previous studies have reported reliable associations between personality and music preferences, but have tended to rely on cross-genre preferences at the expense of preferences within a single subgenre. We sought to overcome this limitation by examining associations between individual differences and preferences for a specific subgenre of music, namely, contemporary heavy metal. A total of 414 individuals from Britain were presented with clips of 10 tracks of contemporary heavy metal and asked to rate each for liking. Participants also completed measures of the Big Five personality traits, attitudes toward authority, self-esteem, need for uniqueness, and religiosity. A multiple regression showed that stronger composite preference for the heavy metal tracks was associated with higher Openness to Experience, more negative attitudes toward authority, lower self-esteem, greater need for uniqueness, and lower religiosity. In addition, men showed a significantly stronger preference for the tracks than women (d = 0.54). These results are discussed in terms of the psychological needs that contemporary heavy metal fills for some individuals. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2013 APA, all rights reserved)

* higher Openness to Experience
* negative attitudes toward authority
* lower self-esteem
* greater need for uniqueness
* lower religiosity

I call bullshit -- this sounds more like an alt-rock crowd.

Metal / Hipster influence in metal defined
« on: November 07, 2013, 12:02:04 PM »
Over the past 20 years, death metal musicians have changed missions somewhat, combining low, brutal vocal stylings with melodic guitars — almost like mashing together Judas Priest's music with deep, throaty Cookie Monster vocals. But generally the mission has stayed the same for all death metal bands: brand your bands with an almost unreadable logo, be scary and play the hell out of your instruments.

That's where the Black Dahlia Murder changed things up. For the past 10 years they've stayed true to death metal's roots and sound, but have packaged and presented it in more of a tongue-in-cheek, punk-rock way — like they can't be bothered with all of death metal's rules and restrictions.

Stage Fright:  When teenager Camilla Swanson, a starry-eyed kitchen hand, lands herself a role in the Broadway-bound showcase at the musical theater camp where she works, blood starts to spill.  The camp is being terrorized by "Metal Killer," a masked slasher who screams death metal rock while hunting down every last pretentious cast member of the show.

Metal / Remasters of reality: How Black Sabbath killed the hippy dream
« on: November 06, 2013, 02:58:14 PM »
Black Sabbath confronted the empty platitudes of the 1960s and, along with Altamont and Charles Manson, almost certainly helped kill off the hippy counterculture.

Guitarist Tony Iommi worked in a Birmingham factory and became fascinated with the sounds and rhythms of the machinery. Eventually he used those industrial influences in the music of Black Sabbath and, along with other pioneers such as Blue Cheer and Led Zeppelin, Iommi helped create a noise that would be known as heavy metal.

Metal / Underground Never Dies! by by Andrés Padilla
« on: November 05, 2013, 04:41:07 AM »

Underground Never Dies! describes the informal network of fans, bands, labels and writers who stayed connected through postal mail and xeroxed 50-page fanzines. This substituted for the huge media network and financial power of the major labels, who soon found themselves wishing they had an underground also.

With a five-track audio sample of the LP of rarities that accompanies the book, and a 3-page preview of the book itself, the following review digs into the first half of the book:
