Metal / Heavy metal is still alive and well (Girlschool)
« on: December 07, 2013, 05:50:14 AM »
No strangers to the gigging and festival circuit, London's own Girlschool are back on home soil. Formed in 1975 under the name Painted Lady, the all girl metal band changed their name to Girlschool in 1978. To this day, an impressive three out of four of the original remembers remain in the line up. Opening their set with 'Demolition Boys' , also the opener of their 1980 debut 'Demolition', Girlschool challenge the modern perception that women in metal either subscribe to fragile, corset-bound female fronted symphonic/power/gothic metal bands or desperately attempt to challenge men by adopting the role of extreme metal growler, both stereotypes usually using beauty as a marketing tool. Their take on heavy metal shares a certain level of ferocity with a focus on double bass drumming, a nod to Motorhead's recognisable gallop, and workman-like vibe devoid of any pretension but full of melodic hard rock guitar hooks.

The majority of their setlist is picked from their first two full-length efforts, the aforementioned debut and the more popular 'Hit and Run' with the quartet comfortably working through a wide breadth of classics including 'C'mon Let's Go', 'Kick It Down', 'The Hunter' and 'Take it All Away'. Their cover of The Gun's 'Race with the Devil' that appeared on 'Demolition' is given an airing, much to the audience's delight, and the South London natives jump forward in time with 'Never Say Never' from 2004's 'Believe' full-length.

Metal / Black Death to perform in Cleveland
« on: December 06, 2013, 04:41:53 AM »
On Saturday, Cleveland power metal legends Shok Paris, whose 1984 album Go for the Throat is highly regarded as a classic in the region and the genre, will perform songs from its upcoming album, Full Metal Jacket. Also on Saturday will be the female-fronted quartet Global Warning, Ground Zero and Black Death Resurrected, a current iteration of the 1980s Cleveland power metal band Black Death whose 1984 self-titled debut earned it the title of “the first all-black metal band.”

I remember seeing Black Death’s album back in 1985 and thinking “Hey, cool. An all-black metal band!” It was definitely the first and possibly the only heavy metal album cover I’ve seen featuring dudes with Jheri curls. Original bassist Greg Hicks, who I’ll assume is no longer rockin’ the curl, is still with the band. The band’s debut album is set for a 30th anniversary release from Auburn records next year.

Metal / Iron Maiden rocks music business

Death metal reports that the reason is that Iron Maiden has worked out a new business model which makes cash, rather than suing fans for ignoring the old one.

Metal / Metal mistakenly maligned
« on: December 03, 2013, 03:57:12 AM »
The classical roots of heavy metal go deep, from traditional to progressive to symphonic to power metal. A 2008 study by scientists at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, which surveyed over 36,000 music fans from six different countries, found that fans of heavy metal and fans of classical music have very similar personality types. According to the study, fans of both genres tend to be creative, introverted, and at ease with themselves.

Other studies have indicated that the link between heavy metal and aggressive tendencies may not be as clear as many believe. A 1997 study by Gowensmith and Bloom in the Journal of Music Therapy found no connection between heavy metal and heightened levels of anger in participants who were already heavy metal fans, suggesting that individual music preferences affect reactions to heavy metal more than the music itself.

The celebrities in this scene are the members of ZEUS, the country's oldest heavy metal band. They've performed in Havana since the 1980s, when this American-influenced music was officially banned by the Castro government. The long-haired rockers — called "freakies" — were thrown in jail and concerts were broken up by state police.

American filmmaker Nicholas Brennan has spent the past four years capturing ZEUS's story and the broader history of heavy metal in Cuba in the feature-length documentary film "Hard Rock Havana".

The film is executive produced by Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney, with Dave Lombardo, Cuban-born former drummer of SLAYER, serving as the music advisor.

Metal / DEATHANGLE ABSOLUTION RECORDS Online Store, 5 New Releases

NEWS AND UPDATES 11/21/13[/size]

Salute… as has been public for the past year at this point, DEATHANGLE ABSOLUTION RECORDS,
been involved in a seemingly never-ending barrage of problems concerning all incoming and outgoing
packages and orders. From packages arriving weeks to months late, being sent to the wrong country with no
explanation, arriving damaged, being returned, or not even being delivered or returned at all and simply
disappearing. This has been primarily for packages outside of the US as it seems that a good portion of the
issues originated after arriving to customs.

During the last few months, I have taken steps to alleviate these issues, as well as laying the new foundation
DEATHANGLE ABSOLUTION RECORDS by creating a system that would allow the label and all of
its operations to function better than ever before in all aspects.

That being said, the main and OFFICIAL new store for
online and running here:

From this point on, ALL new DAR releases, along with all previous releases (including SSP/ADR releases) will
be available here the day of release. No longer will anyone have to write to me for order requests, nor wait for me
to respond, and then wait for me to ship them out. All orders will be processed and shipped from/through

HELLS HEADBANGERS RECORDS, which means that when you order from DAR from now on, you will
be getting an order confirmation number, a tracking number, and in general,
HHR's impeccable and timely service
as before anything goes for sale, the releases will be in the hands of
HHR, ready to ship the day of release.

For now, this means that the ONLY orders and emails that need to come to me are regarding wholesale and or
wholesale pre-order. Over time, this aspect will be headed by
HHR as well. The talks to find an official overseas
distributor is now in place, and there are 2 main labels that are in talks with me now to make things easier for those
in Europe, Asia and anywhere else outside of North America/Canada/Mexico. Until then, all orders will again be
through the
DAR store above.

That being said, the continuing war against against the underground and this world has commenced, and

distributed, it has become a very sought after recording and the most rare of all Audial Decimation Releases.  This first

The 30 year anniversary from one of the last true Underground Hardcore Punk Outlaws. BLOODY F. MESS is connected to nearly every corner

Metal / Iron Maiden put pedal to the metal on road to economic recovery
« on: November 30, 2013, 06:11:27 AM »
In a report published on Friday by the London Stock Exchange, entitled 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain, the band has been named as one of the UK's fastest growing music firms. Iron Maiden LLP, the group's holding company, is one of six music companies outperforming other businesses in the sector. Others include the music app Shazam, Kobalt Music Group and the production music library Audio Network.

Using billions of real-time data from sources such as email traffic, financial transactions, PCs on the web and office space, Iron Maiden are reported to fall into the £10-20m earning bracket. Their financial success is attributed to their ever-expanding global fanbase, especially online.

Metal / Too much metal, by Keith Kahn-Harris

Metal today is in crisis. Metal’s crisis doesn’t feel like a crisis. In fact it sometimes feels like quite the reverse. This is a crisis in which most are unaware that there is a crisis – and that is the crisis. The crisis is one of abundance.

The fact that metal music is no longer found exclusively in physical media removes much of that precious ‘aura’1 that can accompany physical art objects. Demo tapes were exciting and mysterious objects because one had to ‘work’ to track them down. In the 1990s, I remember hearing rumours that there was a Pakistani metal band who had released a demo, something that seemed impossibly obscure and exotic at the time. I tried and failed to track down their tape, but I did track down others from faraway metal lands like the Phillipines and Peru and there was always a delightful frisson when tapes from distant lands finally arrived in the mail. Today, there isn’t much frisson to googling something and finding it. Stripped of the aura, rare and obscure metal recordings become much more mundane.

The dignity of the artist lies in his duty
of keeping awake the sense of wonder in the world.”
G.K. Chesterton

I have been interested in the imagery of fantasy since early childhood and all my artwork is, at its most fundamental level, about creating a “sense of wonder”.  In my illustration, my primary concern has been to create a window into the themes and story elements of a particular book.  My non-commissioned work is concerned with more personal themes.

Stylistically my art is best described as “Imaginative Realism”.  Most closely allied to the scope and feeling of what is referred to as contemporary “Visionary Art”, my gallery art is intentionally imbued with a strong sense of the mystical or dreamlike, and is suffused with symbolic content.  There is a deliberate attempt to invest the image with layers of meaning while having an immediate  subjective or emotional impression.

Metal / Classical musicians covering metal songs

One of the evening’s unexpected treats was a cover of “Path” by Apocalyptica, a heavy metal cello band from Finland. It turns out that metal’s driving melodies and pulsing beats sound fantastic when rendered on an ensemble of four cellos. The Simple Measures quartet blazed through the arrangement, pulling out all the stops and looking like they were having the time of their lives. Their energy was infectious, and I found myself walking out of Town Hall at the end of the evening humming the song’s main melody.

BL'AST!: Resurrected Hardcore Outfit Announces Live Lineup

Band's First Shows In Over Fifteen Years Confirmed

Following announcements over recent months proclaiming the release of Blood! -- the newly-released but vintage recordings from iconic '80s Santa Cruz surf/skate/hardcore act, BL'AST! - the band now confirms their current live lineup which will take over stages in the coming weeks and onward for the first time in over a decade and a half!

Original BL'AST! alumni, vocalist Clifford Dinsmore (also of Dusted Angel, Gargantula) and guitarist Mike Neider have recruited Nick Oliveri (Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Mondo Generator) on bass and drummer Hoss Wright (The Exies, Mondo Generator) to flesh out the brand new 2013 live lineup. Having bashed out a solid set behind closed doors in random sessions in Los Angeles and Santa Cruz over recent months, BL'AST! is ready to rage once again! The band has already been confirmed to supply support to the mighty Neurosis alongside YOB on two California shows at the end of the year; December 28th in Santa Ana, also with Helen Money, and December 29th in San Francisco, also joined by The Body. Another show is coming together in LA in mid-January with more shows to be announced shortly.

Stated Clifford Dinsmore on the band's newly re-ignited status: "The upcoming Neurosis shows really have us feeling the fire, and preparation has been intense! Nick and Hoss are really stepping up to the plate. This new lineup is vital in the continuation of BL'AST! and the addition of new blood makes it even more bombastic and heavy."

BL'AST! Live Actions:

12/28/2013 The Observatory Orange County - Santa Ana, CA w/ Neurosis, YOB, Helen Money [info]

12/29/2013 The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco, CA w/ Neurosis, YOB, The Body [info]

1/18/2014 The Vex - Los Angeles, CA

Now available worldwide via Southern Lord is Blood!, the vintage mid-80s BL'AST! recordings resurrected by Dave Grohl, mixed at his 606 Studios on the legendary Neve console as featured in the Grohl-produced documentary Sound City. Additionally, the recordings were from a rare lineup in the band's lineage, being the only recordings ever made while short-lived second guitarist William Duvall (Neon Christ, currently the vocalist for Alice In Chains) was a part of the BL'AST! family. Formed in 1982, BL'AST! released their debut album, The Power of Expression in 1985, scorching audiences everywhere with their unique and innovative, technical and boundary-free style of raging hardcore punk. This caught the attention of SST Records who released the band's second album, It's In My Blood, in 1987, as well as their third LP, Take The Manic Ride in 1989. BL'AST!'s wide-eyed, ambitious approach and intense perseverance became an influence for many bands to come.

The band's 11th studio album is in-stores now, and features the same diabolical take on reality that has become the trademark of a career spanning more than 25 years.

Says DEICIDE frontman Glen Benton of the new release: "What better way to celebrate a bunch of religious pilgrims coming to America than with 'IN THE MINDS OF EVIL'? Pass the gravy!" Fans and critics agree. Here's a taste of the album's early accolades:

"A rousing maelstrom of fleet, nimble top-tier death metal, razor-sharp jittery grooves and unadulterated malevolence" --Decibel

"A 'demonsend' to long-time fans... You can uncross your fingers because this album was well worth waiting for" --New Noise Magazine
