Metal / Should one strive for success in society, too?

A certain Norwegian artist? I could name close to a hundred.

Most of those 5 artists you refer to (corrected for my definition of 'genius') are capable of critical self-reflection and realize that their once great projects turned into jokes at some point.
What I was alluding to is how the artist in question apparently has not the faintest idea of how great his first 4 albums were, which is, indeed, a bit frightening. Even when it comes from a notorious not-so-stable mind.

But are these things "greater" than what they did?

This was a 'where are they now' thread from the start.

Do these men go on to be bankers and teachers and think of their bands the same way suburbanites think of their high school Bon Jovi rip off group.  That is rather frightening.

Reminds me of a certain norwegian artist who went on from being a genius to become 'a musician', apparently without noticing it himself.

František Štorm (Master's Hammer) founded the Storm Type Foundry in Prague in 1993 with the aim of restoring the values of classical typography for the benefit of digital technologies.

It's almost as though a consensus is being formed.

Or, God forbid, a school of thought is being established. RACITS!!1!

By the sounds of it Varg had intended this to be a collection and reworking of older material

He calls it 'cherry picking' in some interview. Deep inside he must be a cynical man.

rather than a continual narrative.

Why, then, the emphasis on thematic uniformity?

Makes sense as this was intended to be track four on Hvis Lyset Tar Oss.
...which album already covers half of this track, melody-wise. The rest is heard before in  '...Sad Spirit' etc. Good song, but I can see why this one would be deemed superfluous.

I have aspergers and all this anecdotal evidence here doesn't make my weewee feel funny.

When did they fall to pieces? The last album I have by them isTransilvanian Hunger and I have never heard anything after (asides from the track available forCircle the Wagons).
During or after Panzerfaust. I tend to the former, as the album's full of 1st wave worship.

Fortsett rulle, rulle, rulle,
Skjønt strømene er est,
Beholder dem hunder rulle, rålær.

Gjennom regn og vind og vær
var Helvete som blir bøyd for lær,
som Ønsker min gal ved min side.
Alle tingene som jeg mangler,
God mat, kjærlighet, og å kyssing,
venter på slutten av min tur.

Tomatoes in greenhouses grow bigger when subject to metal music. The human testicle analogy doesn't hold water, however, as some tend to shrink.

Edit: that "interview" was enlightening, to say the least.  Raises my expectations of this album (unfortunately).

.ORG carefully distributes incentives for fanboy drooling one chunk of not-so-interesting info at a time. Also: nice move to gather the interview questions before the samples were put out.
I can barely contain myself in anticipation of a BURZUM charity concert for MOTHER RUSSIA.
