Saint Vitus - Heavier Than Thou 2xLP Vinyl

Saint Vitus are gods of doom. They sounded roughly the way Black Sabbath should have after their first few albums. Heavier Than Thou is a compilation album of their best work from the Reagan era. Unlike the aforementioned president, this is a first-rate album.

It features nearly all of Born Too late, and a few songs each from Saint Vitus, Hallow's Victim and Mournful Cries. This is some dark and sad sounding stuff, both in lyrics and instrumentation. “Born Too Late” is about alienation, “Dying Inside” is about alcoholism and “Shooting Gallery” is about intravenous drug abuse. These are just some of the more notable examples of tales of sorrow set to Sabbath-style riffs here. This was definitely not the feel-good album of the year. Unfortunately, it doesn't have Burial at Sea. This is a sad omission, but there are still plenty of great songs.

Two vocalists perform on this album, Wino and Scott Reagers. Wino has the more traditional style, and Reagers sounds a bit like a lounge singer. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. It adds a unique vibe. The rhythm guitar parts are classic doom and are quite enjoyable. The tone is quite nasal, featuring plenty of low-end and midrange without sounding muddy. It's aggressive and sinister sounding, without going overboard. The lead work is competent, but sometimes seems bland when compared to the excellent riffing that serves as the meat in the sonic sandwich. The bass and drum work is good, but isn't as refined and funky as the early Sabbath albums. The bass doesn't usually stray too far from what the guitar is doing. It mainly seems to be there for support, and not a significant part of the song structure. There aren't a lot of drum fills here, but rather a steady pounding to keep the beat. It would've been nice if Vitus added a little more focus to these aspects, but the guitar work is so good I suppose it's not so bad that the bass and drums add reinforcement, as opposed to accompaniment.

This album documents the bridge between the beginnings of doom and the more modern doom of today. It's an important piece of doom history, and a pleasure to listen to. --- SoylentGreenIsPeople

The awesomely named White Witch Canyon is the spangly new project of singer/guitar wrangler/buzz king Eric Hagen, formerly of stoner rock champs Greenhouse Effect. As such, this is not a huge departure from that band: it`s acid-eating Sab-ra cadabra, full of thick, meaty riffs that sound like wooly mammoths plowing through walls of blood-stained snow, bare-chested, flared denim vox, and lava-lamping super jams that practically beg you to play `em on a Camaro`s blown-out cassette deck. Majestic shit, man. If Monster Magnet have let you down these past few years - and let`s face it, they have - then I encourage to sluice down White Witch Canyon. "If you've read anything about Oregon's Witch Mountain, you may have thought, "Great, another female-fronted doom band." Whether you meant that as a good thought or a bad thought, you ought to reconsider them entirely.

Putting a woman in front of a doom band is usually a good idea, as higher-register voices stand out against the heavy grooves, giving balance and contrast to the music. That's why Ozzy worked so well for Sabbath. And sometimes a female-fronted doom metal band sounds just like you might expect: a female-fronted doom metal band. No surprises there. But Witch Mountain's new vocalist Uta Plotkin gives an entirely different spin on things.

She sings with soul, making the band equal parts Joplin and Sabbath. Like Iron Butterfly's almost-appearance at Woodstock, it feels like Witch Mountain should have been there, leveling the audience.

The old-school rock vibe is straight out of that heyday of rock music, and has a solid analog production to complete that sense. But it's transformed by crushing heaviness. In short, this is the absolute best proto-metal album that was never released when it should have been, 40-plus years ago.

"The Deluge" was a very important album in the history of the mighty Manilla Road. Mark "The Shark" Shelton travels back in time: "It was, at the time of its release, the most intricate and complex project that Manilla Road had ever done. The production was better than any of our previous releases and the musicianship was also. 'Open The Gates' had been very successful for us and we were riding high at the time. It was maybe one of the most fun albums to record back in that era. We were all brothers in arms and the world was there for our taking and that's exactly what we tried to do with 'The Deluge': take over the world. I think every aspect of the band was coming together for us very nicely at that time and with all the good feelings about ourselves it was not much of a surprise to us that the album turned out really good. As for the albums that we did after that, 'The Deluge' helped set a higher standard for production and musicianship as well as the composition. It also lead us lyrically into even more historical realms than we had ever traversed before. More literary topics and lyrics and it also helped set the pace for how much research we put into a project. After 'The Deluge' we continued to work more and more in the framework of literature, art and philosophy meets Heavy Metal. I think 'The Deluge' was our first really big step towards becoming a truly epic band."

After 30 years of playing the very best Heavy Metal around, you'd think Manilla Road would finally slow up and write a bad album by now, right? After all these years they have yet to write something bad! And on top of not writing anything bad, Manilla Road always tries to re-invent themselves with every album they create. This album is no different. Seriously, when you hear this, you'll think Mark "The Shark" has written his thick-est and fat-est riffs to date. I mean really, this stuff sounds like Candlemass trying to write a Manilla Road album, or for you know-it-all Manilla Road fans, this is more along the lines of "Hammer Of The Witches" type riff oriented songs throughout the whole album. I'm completely surprised with the direction of this album. I wouldn't call it a Doom Metal album, but it has some really Doom-y and off-the-wall moments. In the end, it sounds like Manilla Road.

Originally released on Battle Cry Records on July 25th 2005 and now out of print. Divided into three parts, Trilogy I: The Frost Giant's Daughter (consisting of three individual tracks), Trilogy II: Out Of The Ashes (consisting of another three numbers) and finally Trilogy III: Gates of Fire (making up the closing three compositions), the album is 72:16 minutes of sheer Epic Metal glory. "Gates of Fire" is a real masterpiece in the typical traditional Manilla Road style and in contrast to "Atlantis rising" and also "Spiral Castle" experimental passages are kept to an absolute minimum. Somehow, compositions like the outstanding up-tempo opener "Riddle of Steel" are going back to the very early albums ("Invasion" and "Metal") - an absolute must for every 80's Manilla Road maniac. Mark Shelton is sharing the vocals (with Bryan "Hellroadie" Patrick) on a couple of tracks, which works absolutely fine and adds another dimension to the sound of the band. Mark's guitar work is as unique as ever. It’s fantastic to see the UK doom scene flourishing that way it has been over the last few years with bands like the almighty Ramesses, Electric Wizard and Silent Winter all releasing material that has received much critical acclaim this year already.  Following on this fine tradition is Dartmoor-based The Wounded Kings whose mysteriously-entitled debut full length “Embrace of the Narrow House” is one of the finest examples of traditional cryptic doom this writer has had the pleasure of reviewing for a good while.
 

Like the soundtrack to some lost Hammer Horror or Lucio Fulci flick these seven haunting tracks sound like the bastard witch-child of the first Sabbath album, Candlemass and Electric Wizard combined, which is certainly no bad thing.  Swathes of organ-drenched eeriness plague the opening title track as the guitars, drums and sampled spoken word vocals slowly build into one of the most spooked doom epics put to tape.  George Birch’s echo/delay-laden vocals add a whole new dimension to these already engaging tracks, with the very live-sounding recording saturating everything in that graveyard ritual atmosphere essential for making this music work so well.  Not only that, the actual song writing is second to none as “Melanthos” and the suitably-titled “Master of Witches” show in superb style, letting the simple despair-ridden riffs and excellent use of abyssal like space seep and lock into mind and spirit.

A review... "...It’s hard to pinpoint Joyless sound. The overall atmosphere is one of neurotic, slow lethargy with haunting riffs and a clear voice. You can hear post-punk elements, new wave, ambient and folk all combined into one enthralling release. It is depressive as it is beautiful, so let me stress once again how utterly original this release is. The only way to describe the conjured atmosphere is a mildly happy, demented dreamlike state. Have A Nice Fight starts with multiple levels of guitars and a sparse, clean drum. The singer’s vocals are as beautiful as they are fragile. Puberty And Dreams is quite different from the rest of the tracks because of the male voice included. The riff of this 2nd track is truly memorable and has a strong, radio friendly hook. Better is this happy-go-lucky track (‘Every Day Is Better Than The Next’) that serves as a antidote to the ‘depressive’ tag. Shadow Spree is a fun, poppy new wave kind of a track, with a strong, ‘indie’ riff. Notice how I get tongue-tied & mixed up in tags and labels while trying to describe the tracks of Without Support. Trilobite is quite a punky song with an old school drum and in the spotlight once again the lovely voice of Ida Hellebø. Shimmer And Shine has this slowly, dragging thing going, while Velvet Willows is all sweetness and Velvet Underground. The songs are longer, allowing more compositions and small details within each bellowing track. This being said, each song does not sound rushed at all, but more carefully drawn out. From the beginning of the first track, one may note that there are very interesting stylistic approaches that the band began to take in order to enhance its already encasing atmosphere. With guitar distortion swelling to a point in which it almost sounds natural, and plenty of the drummer's utilization of the toms to craft an almost tribal sound, one could easily assume that if they had not made this a metal album, it could have passed as a very effective ritualistic ambient release. The first track is somewhat mellow and drawn out, perhaps done in order to ease the listener's passing into their world. Then, throughout the second track, the pace begins to pick up, little by little. By the end of the second track, the drums end up not sounding like metal drumming at all, but moreover a percussive composition with the toms. By the end of the third track, it eases once again. It is as if the album gets progressive, and then smoothly mellows out for the listener's safe departure back in the real world. As far as the sound and the atmosphere, an album cannot get much more encasing than this. Once drawn into this dark, melodic, and epic world, it is uneasy to find your way out until the end. This being said, the atmosphere is almost impenetrable. Seemingly, the goal of this release was to bring the listener outside of his or her current state and join theirs, in their netherworld of nature and somber nostalgia. One can almost taste their reverence for an untainted world, and their disregard for the fallible and insipid modern society that disappoints them."
