Metal / Graveland revisited
« on: August 30, 2012, 11:42:45 AM »
If memory serves me correctly, most of the material on The Celtic Winter is borrowed from In the Glare of Burning Churches demo, only itís slicker in execution and production. I think this actually detracts somewhat from the feral tension which characterized the originals. Carpathian Wolves is probably my all time favourite, especially the second half which slows down into epic, ritualistic, last day on earth type stuff.

Objectively, Thousand Swords and Following the Voice of Blood represent the pinnacle of Darkenís artistic vision (not forgetting the Veles albums from the same year which probably owe as much to Darken as anybody). Everything that came after is of integrity but never reached those same heights.

So far, only Beheritís Engram might offer us an effective solution to the bell curve problem.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.

Art of the Fugue, see: Musica Antiqua KŲln

There isn't an internet upload of this anywhere but I found an enticing organ rendition by the great Helmut Walcha.
Will need to wait a few weeks for my bandwidth to re-spawn.

I'm not a massive fan but I still play The Karelian Isthmus fairly regularly. Tales From The Thousand Lakes has a few ok parts but is overall too goofy for my liking.

A human gets the job done too without costing a mint in engineering and maintenance. This is how the Chinese can build an empire amidst an age of technological dependence for the west; near inexhaustible human-labour.

He didn't get a mental health defence, which could mean a few things depending on how government and media decide their own best course of action. Ideally, they would seek to disarm the validity of his political motivations as delicately as possible (as if he hadn't done that already by the very nature of his crimes).

But for many, it's not altogether unworkable to agree in part with Breivik's sentiment while condemning his actions.

Metal / Essential J.S. Bach
« on: August 22, 2012, 12:47:48 AM »
I finally reached some weird evolutionary stage as a classical listener whereby all roads inevitably lead back to the great baroque masters. But I'm like a child to this. So far I discovered J.S Bach's best works are his 6 Brandenburg concertos, his fugal organ music and the St Matthew passion (still early days but I'm already thinking it might be the pinnacle of music full stop).

Feel free to make comment, correction or additions to that list.

Metal / Re: Sepultura - Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation
« on: August 18, 2012, 01:53:34 AM »
Well, to some degree Morbid Visions is still bound in the black/death/thrash prototype style of the period (things like constant tempo, simplified riffing). The contrasts of Onwards to Golgotha belong to death metal proper.

English as the lingua franca of a dying modern world couldn't be any more culture deprived. It literally is the language of trolls and orcs. I would agree that it's better to be a master of your own tongue, and if you succeed all the geniuses will translate you anyway.

In other words, wisdom doesn't stem directly from intelligence but it also isn't possible without it? I just felt depressed after finding that most people, regardless of intellect, mimic their emotional spectrum from hollywood movies, and thought there must be a more comprehensive valuation of the person than IQ alone.

I think the old forum from about 10 years ago was something like this anyway?

Black Sabbath represents the beginning of the transcendental viewpoint which extreme metal would later embrace. The moment of subconscious realization as the first hominid gazed up at the stars.

Metal / Re: Art (abstract)
« on: August 15, 2012, 01:01:03 PM »
I used to believe that art is a means of communication, however, the most profound art seems to communicate something that is way beyond artist or artwork.

On some level music can be likened to a means of communication, much like a language consisting of grammatical rules. This is the basic element but of course language varies extensively in its intent and eventual effect. Therefore the music I seek out is mostly in the language of profundity.

Regarding the artist, I think no common criticism sums up his true role more succintly than "too self-conscious". A means of mastering language, himself but devoid of ego.

So the general consensus is that so called EQ is a diversion from the real issue; low IQ on mass (or at the very least, that the two frameworks are somewhat incompatible). I became interested in this after thinking that IQ alone couldnít accurately define a healthy, functional person in that it couldnít account for things like courage, practical skills, artistic creativity, or other necessary characteristics. Am I missing something or is IQ a component part of a more holistic approach?

i put on my finest suit
and set off for the journey of my life
into the woods
eight thirty
and i am in the woods
smearing my face and hair
with the foul earth
how did it end up like this
my last day on earth

Quite a problem for me sometimes; how to get motivated and then maintain that level throughout the life-journey.

(and yes I mean that without the use of stimulants, all you psychos).
