Chasm / Re: Maryland Deathfest: Who's Going
« on: May 21, 2013, 12:01:44 AM »Should we organize some sort of meeting of forum members here? Maybe get some beers or a meal together.
Excellent idea. Just try to have it not end in reckless sodomy like last time...
Oh, sodomy. Always the group activity!
Anyways, I have two ideas for this. First, Derketa is playing a show on Thursday before the MDF show that day at a bar very near the fest location - we could meet there. Alternatively, Friday the fest doesn't start until 3 PM. Hesher brunch?
I'm game for everything incl. the ass play (what is a Derketa?)
But yes, lunch/drinks, sounds good.

I'll agree that these states are in fact awesome, and our limited science hasn't explained them sufficiently (yet), so we shouldn't just reduce them to "chemical reactions in the brain."

From another view, just because it's sensible to align politically with Traditional Christianity, doesn't mean Christian symbology fits the metal weltanschauung.
Yet, black metal eventually attached strongly to Norse Paganism, and I think metal (past, present, future) is opposed to Christianity in particular, even its "purest" form, if only because it arose in rejection of the latter and its effects. You're right though, Hessianism carries great potential.
Unfortunately, we seem to have all but divested Christianity of its meaning and impetus. As such, I doubt that a new Metal movement will be born out of a return to an earlier tradition, but, rather, it will be born out of the reconstitution of Tradition in a new format (the Hessian culture, fully formed). Or, perhaps, that is the apex of Metal.

For masculine frot, I/We prefer a simple gold standard like O.P.E.T.H., but I can see the appeal of these also.

In recent developments, Death Metal Underground Ayatollah Vijay Prozak has confirmed the jurispudent validity of the fatwa in question, insisting on its 100% compliance with Shariah law.
Asked if this decree was not just extremist gibery goo, Grand Ayatollah replied that only the death sentence is real.
When pressed to cite specific verses from Al-Qur'an which prove the guilt of the accused, Ayatollah Prozak only smiled.
Quote from: Prozak
"The texts are clear, an infidel is one who succumbs to solipsism and subverts reality to please his ego. When the individual commits this mockery publicly, he must recant or pay with his life, praise be to Allah (S.W.T)."

Metal / Re: Albums you used to bother with
« on: September 11, 2012, 01:44:41 PM »I used to adore the pants off of Beyond Sanctorum by Therion. However I keep getting hung up on all the block head chugga chugga filler riffs. Half of this album is solid gold, the rest is aggravatingly pedestrian
Not much filler on this classic, Beyond Sanctorum is natural selection itself, building from simple elements an architectural narrative of imagery that transcends genre.
It's not stylistically novel by today's standards but then, when choosing a riff, the best metal would rather eschew the most attention grabbing for one that fits the greater purpose of composition and, that word again, narrative.
I'd give it another bash or seven before dumping it.

This is one of those albums meant to be committed to [edit: permanent] memory, to the point where the mere mention of it has your mind's ear recalling it in intricate detail.

I can do some of the important bands under 'M', namely Massacra, Mayhem, Monstrosity, Morpheus Descends, Motorhead, Mutiilation if no one else has planned to already.
