Introducing intelligent people to intelligent metal

Why not make a compilation that alternates between spacey ambient music and black metal. It would be a good way of showing that mood/spirit shares strong similarities despite different approaches in sound. Burzum, Robert Rich, Darkthrone, Steve Roach, Emperor, Jean Micheal-Jarre, Immortal, Brian Eno, Summoning, Klaus Schulze, Enslaved, Biosphere.

Why do you want friends/peers to like this music? That's not an accusation but a genuine question. Do you want them to enjoy it so you have something more to share with them? Do you want them to learn something from the music on an artistic level? an ideological level? Or do you want them to respect you? All of these can be good reasons but what's most important to you?

The bolded question is, I think, the most common. Introducing others to something artistic that one is interested in is much like introducing them to any other hobby, but there's something more. As a part of my identity and a window to my heart and mind, my interest in music is something I don't readily tell people. And if I just explained it away as something fun to listen to in the car, I would feel cheapened. It can be very personal even though I didn't write it, I just hit Play.

And the feeling of rejection from their lack of interest is even more pointed than if I was just introducing them to making bird houses or target shooting or something like that.

In any case, albums: I'd probably suggest In the Nightside Eclipse for black metal and for death metal, I dunno, maybe Here in After or The Red in the Sky is Ours. actually I'd probably do a mix tape.

Opposite question right back at you to be honest. Why wouldn't you at least try to share something that means so much to you at least once. If they simply don't get it then there was no harm in trying. I honestly can't understand what is so difficult to understand about this. It's not about gaining some weird sort of validation from your friends, just sharing ideas. It doesn't have to end in conversion or even sympathy, it's just an interesting way to interact with individuals with a certain mindsite

Ok, firstly just because someone has above average intelligence and a good ear for music it does not mean they will automatically come across bands on the DLA. There is absolutely no harm in directing people towards music they may be interested in, as long as one is selective in who they give these recomendations to. Secondly, metal is not a thing of times past. Even if a remotely credible metal album is never again put to record it still has relevance today and will do until this sorry species dies out. You have clearly learnt nothing about metal from this forum and website. Lastly, no one is talking about forcing anything onto anyone, just friendly recomendations are on the table here.

I gave a couple friendly recommendations, but then some irate asshole told me I have clearly learnt nothing about metal.

All I was saying is there is no underground scene anymore, so it's not like you're aiding Death Metal by getting your buddies into it, only preserving it's legacy.

There are plenty of underground scenes, they just don't have that worldwide quality that the '80s and '90s scene(s) had.

When I say scene, I mean a group of young kids (16 to 25 typically) that come together to make some passionate and naive, yet intelligent music. So far in my lifetime, I have yet to see this except in Texas. Too bad Averse Sefira doesn't take pride in the fact they are Texans! They should perform every show in front of a huge Texan flag! Should have joined the army, they would have learnt some respect for their land...

Haha, come to London, man.  We've got something of a "scene" going on - three or four bands spread over maybe twice as many musicians, and the music is awesome/retarded.

I couldn't agree more. Involvement in this thread presupposes that you have intelligent friends, and in my book that presupposes that you have some respect for them, which in turn leads to engaging discussions about things you care about. Music is bound to come up, so why share music? Why should that entail some desperate need for vindication?

I seem to remember similar threads to this in that past where people immediately skip to the end and write a reactionary post about not infecting their precious metal with more hipsters. If that is indeed your opinion, re-read the thread, if you still think that then you've obviously failed to grasp some simple concepts about social interaction.
