Art as a hobby is fine. Art as a career is useless.
Art is more than a hobby. I see it as a door to the spiritual. At least, good art should do that. What is bad to make art as a career? All of the greatest artists from the antiquity to the XIXe did art as a career. It's the capitalism, the lack of culture and spiritual drive who damaged the artistic world, not having a career out of it. Artists like bards, tragedians, were the ciment of ancient societies.
I would go as far as saying that we need more artists to go professional. But good ones. By doing so, there will be a chance where there's more great architecture, music, theater, movies, etc. By always remaining in the underground, the society will always remain rotten.
