Alternatives to your bored lifestyle, if you think you have one.

It's completely serious. The original poster offers smoking pot with friends as an alternative experience, but what makes it anymore authentic than spending time on a video games and/or virtual reality? Merely being fun and physical doesn't constitute worthwhileness or real, both are constructed experiences with little or nothing to do with reality outside of our little homestead we call a society.

Listening to someone moralise on how virtual reality/video games is wrong is tiring, especially when they are diluted enough into thinking that whatever social contribution they make actually matters.
Why would you include the a) a career (ie job) then and b) building a house, two things which have been involved in every successful society to date. If you walked outside every once in a while you'd realise that when you leave your parent's caring grasp you'll need a) a roof over your head and b) a job to support yourself and your family.

Enough with the exaggerations already, please.

edit: I don't know about this thread, it's informative in the sense that it's a refresher (as if we haven't heard it all before on this site, many times before!) but it's also moralistic and instructive in such a sense that the original poster cannot get away from the tone of "you're wrong and I'm right, so sit down, shut up and fucking listen."

I really do not see what purpose it serves on this site, maybe another site if you want to piss off a few people.

Yea, that's it. Looking to piss off as many people as I can by encouraging them to get productive, nailed it. Get busy living or get busy dying, I feel no sympathy for the weak. I've stated my reasoning twice before, as if the thread title wasn't obvious enough.

I can't really blame you though, mate. It's not like I haven't done it myself many times before.

I guess a Happy New Year to you and best of luck in your endeavours.

Not that it matters, but are you a new poster or someone who retired an old username?

There's a lot of subjectivity in this, and subjectivity in those who read it, along with my sarcasm. Meant for people curious enough to stumble upon this site in the first place.

A lot of people, when they mention they gave up TV, fail to mention how often they use the internet and to what end. The internet has the potential to be as destructive if not more destructive than television.

I find myself checking the same sites repetitively, so I suppose its potential as becoming as bad as checking the same television channels is evident. I can't focus on TV enough anymore.. I'll check the weather, maybe watch some of the local news but even that has become overly riddled with ad placement and other useless junk. The internet is starting to follow suit in ad placement in videos now, so perhaps it will be time to move on from that as well.

I notice my interest in the internet itself dulls more when the weather breaks and its warm enough to venture outdoors.. gardening, and general yard maintenance is a relaxing way to spend time as well, other than that its fishing or biking/hiking nearby trails and woodlands..

As for the majority of my time.. I help run a small bread bakery for other small local businesses for work, the pay is nominal but its manual labor and much more appeasing than mindlessly dragging my feet around the world hoping something new happens working for some franchise.

Back when I was 17 years old I played WoW for about 20 hours per week. After two years, I noticed the player community turn from mostly cooperative, mature, enthusiastic RPG nerds to mostly confrontational, passive-aggressive, selfish losers. The player population soared to over ten million as the Crowd took over.

I'm still a fantasy / RPG nerd and probably always will be, and I still play video games at "LAN parties" about once a month, but after quitting WoW, things just naturally changed:

(a) Body - Went from 209 lbs. to 175 lbs. without even trying, gained muscle and looked more lean with little effort, women (even older women... yuck) actually approach me now, many even flirt
(b) Mood - Feel more motivated, procrastinate less, living space is very clean, feel more dominant, less stressed, closer to the universe, want to build and create
(c) Activities - Read more, draw and paint more, walk, run, or bike through the forest preserve more, pick up litter, patrol neighborhood
(d) Clean - Not to seem like a false-elitist or snob, but I tend to eat only healthy foods, listen to less but better music, read less but better authors

At this point I am looking to join already existing group activities / projects as well as found some my self.

I think the point of this thread is not to show how we're such good boys and girls, but to show how we attempt to become someone other than:

Mr. Meek
"It is not the language of painters but the language of nature which one should listen to, the feeling for the things themselves, for reality, is more important than the feeling for pictures." - Van Gogh

Feels good man. I agree though, girls are yuck! Especially ones with boobs.

I suppose that was immature of me, but I did say "older" (in one case we're talking 27 years older).

Come to think of it, maybe that's still immature. -.-

Sarcasm intended, in response to your humbling list of activities you've become active in. A 27-year age difference is disgusting to anyone, don't feel alone (unless you want to be on some weird episode of Maury).

Good. And it's time to stop giving people credit for participating when they don't do anything except pursue selfish, ineffective ends.

This forum has a lot of good people, and then some people who strut around as if they own the place, but do nothing for ANUS or metal.

And no, a myspace band/tiny blog/irrelevant zine doesn't count. Not all of you are the next Burzum, so stop posing.

Many of us come here because we value this community's esoteric thought, but I would imagine those many of us have our own goals. I'm not as interested in metal as most of the ANUS community, but I've been reading it's articles for years now and there's always some interesting discussion here on the forums. Doesn't mean I'm going to wholly dedicate myself to it.

Agreed, however hating people for not being up to your standards is lame as well. Alex Birch's recent post on Corrupt.org explains a similar concept, of "open-mindedness" taken to a realistic level. You may meet some morbidly-obese person that can hold a conversation well and provide some insight, but overall he is still a morbidly-obese man. His actions resulted in extremely detrimental health, and thus is poor  decision he made. That doesn't make him a worthless, insignificant speck on the map though. Also, hating him for merely that doesn't make you a very open-minded or realistic person either, but there's no black-and-white method of choosing good friends and bad. Like nihilism, we grow to understand emotions and utilize them differently in how we mature as people, so classifying every overweight person as an "idiot" or "piece of shit" gets nobody anywhere since it's only focused upon the negative. Well-rounded judgment should often be employed.

A lot of people, when they mention they gave up TV, fail to mention how often they use the internet and to what end. The internet has the potential to be as destructive if not more destructive than television.

Agreed. I've noticed that a lot of people are giving away TV because they can have their shows anytime they want without advertisements between their favorite programs. As well, internet is getting more real than reality shows because it is able to project charismatic, extroverted but average idiots through a webcam, making "acute" and "irreverent" observations unseen in TV (OMG!, this guy is right, I deleted the porn pages record in the browser of my office's computer, but I forgot the cookies! it's sooo typical!) , and you can interact with them and have the 15 min. of global fame that TV never gave you.

Giving away TV is not as brave as it was before the internet and the Youtube.

The trick is to hold yourself closer to your ideals in such a way that others can observe them. Xtians had it right when they said, "let your light shine among men that they may see your good works" [is this a repeat?]. It's not about being BUtRLA VKeL! It's about finding center and holding true amongst the storms. Don't let yourself get fat. Don't let apathy or selfishness invade your social circle. Don't think that a wasted hole in your life is somehow justified.

Good guideposts:

1. Use the internet for specific purposes, like "I need to research this" only.
2. Your TV, radio and mainstream media are the same thing. Listen only to classical, throw out the TV, and read the Wall Street Journal
3. Most of your "friends" are parasites --- get rid of them
4. Most people you "date" are whores --- find someone with a clearer goal in life
5. If you only have a job, you are failing it. Become necessary.
6. Ignore your parents' advice
7. Ignore Hollywood's advice
8. Read the classics, especially the Greeks
9. Help out here at ANUS

If you can't do all of the above, you're an underman.
