Demilich/Averse Sefira Shows in Texas

Houston and Austin are about 200 miles apart

Austin: Saturday, June 3rd - The Bathroom (map)

Houston: Sunday, June 4th - Walters (map)

On Friday, if you're getting into the Houston airport (IAH) between 4-8 pm local time, I can pick you up. There may be a delay if we're waiting for another person. Please notify me in advance

On Saturday, from noon - 4 PM, if you're getting into the Austin airport (ABIA) and let me know in advance, I or another can pick you up.

My advice:

Flights into Houston are usually cheaper. I would fly to Houston, ride to Austin for the show, and come back to Houston the next night and see that one as well.

It will be summer, so expect daytime temperatures of above 90 F and nightime in the 70s.

$20-30/day for food and incidentals. Hotels can be had in both cities for $70/double a night; $35 for a motel, and $15-20 for a hostel (dorm room).

Brief guide to Texas cities:

Houston is like Los Angeles; it's a giant sprawl with many districts in which businesses, homes, government buildings and what looks like post-nuclear wasteland are intermingled. They filmed "Robocop" in Houston for a good reason. Still, it's America's friendliest city, has the best/cheapest food of any place in the USA, and is a good place to get a house for low cost and earn a buttload of money, as it's a major city without some of the major city overhead.

Austin is like San Francisco; it's a giant coffee klatch in which competitive altruism, or feeling good about yourself for your own external deeds while pitying those who "need" your help (parasites), is encouraged. It's more leftist than New York city as a result, and most of the people are so ineffective that they cannot bathe, read, or defecate regularly and are constantly in the center of a vortex of their own drama. Food is more expensive and greasy, but most things are on a student budget, so it's a great place unless you need basic services. It is a more music-oriented town, but most of its music is emo-rockabilly hybrids with "unique" additions like reed pipes and hip-hop beats.

Texas on the whole is a wonderful place; it's hot, but everything grows (contrary to public opinion, the Southern half of Texas is mostly verdant) and the diversity and abundance of wildlife is gorgeous. The people who are natives are generally both friendly and realistic, since they live in a place where stepping into the wrong rattling clump of grass can mean a fittingly Darwinian end. I love it and call it home, but you can say anything you want about the place without "hurting my feelingth" -- it's not for everyone. However, if this is your first time viewing the JCSA up close, it's a great place to start.

Responses continue to trickle in via email. A few general thoughts:

(1) If you come all the way to Texas, you might as well go to both shows; all that separates you from them is six hours of driving.

(2) There are people here already volunteering to chip in with labor, driving and food. If we pool resources, it is easy to afford anything.

(3) One option not explored are standby tickets; often, it is possible to fly half-price by specifying this option. For it, you show up early at the airport and wait until there's a partially-full flight.

(4) There has been talk of a beach cleanup and campout after the shows for those who do not want to travel again quickly.

Walter's on Washington?  Good luck with that venue.  It's like five miles from my house...At least the stage is setup in such a way that the band and crowd are
punching distance from each other.  If you don't know anything about the
bands that are opening it's likely they'll be really shitty Converge clones.

If people comming in from out of town or folks from the band need a place to
have a shower and a sit down I'll offer my apartment.  It's pretty close to
the venue.  I won't have any crash space for later so everyone's on their
own with that, but if out-of-town-or-country-ers need somewhere to take a
load off prior to Walter's I'm cool with that.

They need to make it up the west coast to the Seattle/Portland areas then...nevermind, it's all about strategy and logistics...and at the tail-end of that is the money and support, which are in short supply...fortunately grunge killed the rockstar, but unfortunately, it also killed the true metal band as well!

No, I really don't think it will sell out. It should be a good show none the less. I'm really looking foward to it, I was just at The Backroom last Saturday putting up some flyers for it, so hopefully the turnout will be good.

I got back this morning (at 5:45) from the Brooklyn show, at North Six, and it was quite an amazing experience! The performance was held in what is probably the smallest, dingiest venue I've ever visited; there was no room for more than 50 persons, low ceiling, and the stage was nothing more than a short curb, maybe 4" high. During their set, water had been dripping onto Antti Boman's head from the pipes above.

Yet the entire time, I felt quite certain that this is exactly what a metal performance ought to be like. Demilich played with such sincerity, it was as if they had never disbanded, or never stopped practicing their limited catalogue of songs, leastways.

Feeling a bit sleep deprived; but I wish the best to the bands and the audience in Texas--it most certainlywill be one heck of a show!
