Napalm Death Announces Spring North American Tour

Grindcore pioneers Napalm Death, now playing a hybrid of death metal, grindcore, and indie rock as they have for the past two decades, launch their Spring North American Tour 2020 with tourmates Aborted (April 17-May 16), The Locust (April 9-April 15), Nastie Band (April 9-April 15), Tombs (April 24-May 16), and Wvrm (April 17-May 16) for select dates.

While their last really good album was in 1996 with Fear, Emptiness, Despair, the band has continued innovating, working in bits of Japanese fuzz-grind, shoegaze, emo, progressive rock, and even grunge within the death metal and grindcore hybrid the band first developed on Mentally Murdered way back when, before it was obvious that our society had fallen apart and political lyrics were pointless.

The band recently announced the release of a new 7″ digital EP, Logic Ravaged By Brute Force, which is set for release on February 7th. The double-a-side EP includes the new title track and a cover of Sonic Youth’s “White Kross”. The release also acts as a teaser for the band’s forthcoming studio album, expected for release late 2020.

ABOUT NAPALM DEATH
Napalm Death’s enduring impact on the world of sonic savagery began in earnest in the late 80s, when the band’s first two albums – 1987’s Scum and its 1988 follow-up From Enslavement To Obliteration – refined and redefined the notion of brutality and velocity in the worlds of punk, hardcore and metal. Endorsed by legendary and much-missed DJ John Peel, the Brummie grindcore pioneers were such an exhilarating and yet alien dose of jolting adrenaline that even the mainstream media were forced to prick up their ears and take note. Throw in the fact that Napalm Death were – and still are – driven by a ferocious intelligence and a genuine desire to make the world a better place through the promotion of rational thought and respect for all fellow humans, they stood apart from the often nihilistic and intellectually bankrupt underground metal scene and have remained unique and unerring ever since. While grind purists may point to those earliest records as evidence of the band’s significance, it is the tireless and terrorising exploits of the now classic line-up of vocalist Mark ‘Barney’ Greenway, bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris and drummer Danny Herrera that have cemented Napalm Death’s status as extreme music legends. Over the last 20 years, the band have released a relentless slew of groundbreaking and fearless albums and other releases that have consistently punched holes in the heavy music world’s perimeter fence, espousing an indestructible credo of creativity and lyrical fire along the way.

ABOUT ABORTED
Over the course of the group’s 20-plus career, they’ve transformed-via tongue-through-cheek and gross-out histrionics- from minor curio to the Powerhouse from Flanders. The ascent through death metal’s maggot-infested, disease-ridden ranks didn’t come easy, however. Starting with 2003’s stab-to-the-face Goremageddon: The Saw and the Carnage Done, Aborted crawled through some of the most disgusting sewers, serviced some of the wickedest human waste plants, and cleaned up Europe’s most brutal crime scenes. From there, it’s been nothing but true reverence (by fan and peer alike) across six agonizingly good full-lengths. Aborted are, however, sickly serious and positively savage about their craft. Aborted is Sven De Caluwe (vocals), Harrison Patuto (guitar), Ian Jekelis (guitar), Ken Bedene (drums), and Stefano Franceschini (bass).

Do people actually listen to these guys or just say they do because they’re “supposed” to? You know, like all grind.

    1. Not since 1997 or so. Napalm Death has mostly shifted audiences, but a lot of people like going to hear the old tunes and see Barney barf out incoherent lyrics one more time. The intermediate period of Napalm Death, 1989-1996 or so, had a lot of really epic music.

As usual, the DMU experiences a great conflict here. 10% of our audience want pieces on airy theory and philosophy, but the other 90% come here for news of the death metal and related musical forms community and need regular news and coverage of releases of interest. DMU has always suffered under this, since the 10% are “closest” in many ways to the DLA, but when it panders to that group, it gets navel-gazy and solipsistic and loses out on the need to support the wider community, even if parts of it suck ass, mainly because if we at least are discussing the assuck, we can gain some clarity on it.

If I gave a fuck these days,
I’d impale their vehicle tires, but,
are they the direct ones causing a lot of crap in the black/death metal scene for bands that aren’t politically correct?

    1. Seaman says:

Yeah they are a real nuisance especially the big mouth on Barney

    2. No doubt. Barney ran away from me when I confronted his assumptions on the old Napalm Death message board. Like dying Big Tech, he has attracted a crowd of SJW losers to support him since Napalm Death has lost relevance to the wider death/black/grind community. But, ideology is great because you can con people into buying things just because of guilt and being part of a group; I mean, look at how many Boomers watched The Big Chill, read Consumer Reports, and bought frickin’ bean sprouts just to be cool like The New York Times told them to be. Napalm Death stepped into indie/prog territory in 1997 and have never really come back. They were good as a grind band, better as a hybrid deathmetal/grindcore band that was not as brick-shittingly dumb as most goregrind and deathgrind, but now are trying to appeal to indie kids. They’re relics from the pre-hip-hop days of popular underground music. What else are they gonna do but be edgy Communists who shave off the audience from Rage Against The Machine when they decide they want to be really hardcore? It worked for Godflesh, which got the Ministry spillover for decades, despite being arguably the better band.

    I’m getting mixed messages here.

    1. There’s no point discriminating against other political viewpoints. Let the music speak for itself.

      1. Misanfrot (pro-sodomy, pro-coprophagia, pro-tranny, pro-death) says:

Politics is gay, but disregarding politics is even gayer.

Guess I have something they call cerebral discordance.

        1. I am not arguing for disregarding politics, only keeping it out of our assessment of the music. “Fear, Emptiness, Despair” is a great album even if it was made by a bunch of Communists.

That was sort of the peak for Napalm Death, however. After that, everything has been gimmicky and on the pop side. It became the Barney band and went after whatever seemed trendy at the time, now having bottomed out as banal screamo.

Every stop of this faggot tour will have more shemales than men!

Fear, Emptiness, Despair was in 1994.

  9. Anonymoose says:

Napalm Death’s politics were always lame, but at least they made compelling music up until Utopia Banished. Absolutely nothing interesting came afterwards.

Lee Dorrian’s politics are just as lame as Barney’s:

my cock told me not to listen to any ND after 92

    2. I had real bad kidney pains for about five days, and they just got worse and worse to the point where I had to call an ambulance. Then the ambulance took, like, four hours to get here while I was dying in pain. Then they just threw me into the [emergency room] for about six hours and left me to die. They treated me like a dog because they thought I was a junkie after free drugs or something. When I eventually saw a nurse, he couldn’t believe I was alive, let alone functioning. I’d lost about half my blood from internal bleeding. Then they fucking sent me home and told me to come back on Wednesday! In the end, they kept me in there for about two weeks. I had four blood transfusions. The ward I was in was full of 90-plus-year-old dementia patients, so it was quite an experience. The way I was treated was really bad.

Gosh socialized medicine sounds really swell.
