Tarnkappe – Winterwaker (2016)

tarnkappe_-_winterwaker

Tarnkappe‘s Winterwaker (“Guardian of Winter” in English) is another Dutch black metal album aiming to extend the victories of the old forward into a modern world deluged with genericized and masqueraded jingle rock. Most modern black metal recordings consist of typical verse chorus verse hardcore punk songs with occasional tremolo-picked, hopefully minor key riffs and raspy vocals to differentiated it from the punks with their spiky hair and Sharpie-drawn straight edge Xs in the same way that modern opposing political parties mostly present two sides of the same leftist coin merely aiming the public towards financially catering to differing oligarchic leagues. Tarnkappe, a duo composed of members of Kaeck and Kjeld, aim to bury the bodies of the mainstream-media promoted black ‘n’ roll and “war metal” themed crossover thrash groups in an unmarked, shallow mass grave in the forest-tundra.

The compositions resemble a more cohesive version of early Gorgoroth with individual melodies intertwined narratively together. Rather than throwing in a smorgasbord of pointless heavy metal rhythms and Hellhammerisms, Tarnkappe riff almost exclusively in long-form melodic phrases of tremolo-picked notes. Their songs are mostly constructed by alternating between two carefully chosen but contrasting riffs, building tension with an almost call and response (think Master’s Hammer‘s Ritual),  each riff slowly variating into the next. The properly metronomic martial percussion of blast and pickup beats flows and fills with the riffs’ narratives until the inflated tension is relieved by the guitars suddenly charging forward to an end with a triumphal novelty in the same rhythm, concluding the melodic narrative in a similar climactic method as Massacra utilized on Final Holocaust.

Tarnkappe are a sword rising from the water to set the world to right through bloodshed. Tarnkappe violently trample and mangle drunk punks into sanguine skid marks across low lands caught by an inextinguishable fire. Creating order from chaos, Winterwaker is fueled by potent but disparate powers of the past united into cycles of creational destruction culminating in resplendent conquest.

  2. Nathan Metric says:

Sounds like every other black metal band ever. Try Evilwar from Brazil.

    1. The title track is just good. No idea why Hammerheart chose that one for the video.

  3. Erectile Perditionist says:

    DSO’s latest EP just dropped!
Don’t try to act like you don’t know what ‘DSO’ is…

    1. The review will come when I subject a staffer to it.

Duuude, no way. Like, DSO restored my faith in black metal. I was losing hope with the genre, so much unoriginality, and not to mention problematic political viewpoints that made it hard for me to admit I even like the genre when I talk about music at the local independent free trade cafe near the Ethiopian restaurant. I was about to just pretend I never liked it and go back to my vaporwave and Sonic Youth until I discovered DSO. Like, they have “weird time signatures” and they take inspiration from “French surrealists” (according to lastfm)! That’s so deep and intelligent. Like, more metal should be deep and intelligent, dude.

Someone have a nice suggestion for some black metal on CD one could buy? This here is ok, although already a bit too melodic for my tastes. Preferably released between 2014 and now and ideally, rather dissonant or dark than “white and beautiful” (I found a few things which look interesting but I can’t look everywhere).

    1. Kaeck’s Stormkult. Imprecation’s album is good if you don’t have that yet.

    2. Sammath – Godless Arrogance.

      It’s not fruity

    3. C.M. says:

      Fucking SAMMATH – Godless Arrogance

      1. BUY IT! RIDE THROUGH FILTH AND THE REMAINS OF MAN!

      2. Rainer Weikusat says:

Thanks (to everyone). I already have the Sammath album (as you suggested that a few months ago). Anybody who cares for this kind of music should get it.

        1. C.M. says:

Ah cool, sorry for not being able to keep track of to whom I recommend what.

Then I have to second Daniel’s suggestion of Kaeck – Stormkult, it’s written by the same guy who does Sammath and is similar in spirit but a little less warlike, more mystical if that makes any sense.

Infamous from Italy has been putting out some quality stuff in recent years as well.

Also, thank you for the other suggestions. I really like the music of the Norwegian and Italian band (and I’m planning to get the Imprecation album at some later date). But I’m not a “metal tourist” who travels to festivals in strange, faraway countries to stare in amazement at the natives making exotic, mysterious noises with the mouths he doesn’t understand which makes the experience all the more pleasing (as someone from the Terrorizer crew did). If someone wants to create music for Italians or Norwegians (or Lithuanians) that’s fine. But if I don’t understand the lyrics, I won’t buy it.
