Imperishable – Deathspawn (2021)

Approaching Swedish death metal as a hybrid of Dismember and Dissection, Imperishable begin songs with tightly-socketed riffs that correspond directly to each other, then build up to melodic riffs that are equal parts Iron Maiden and classic death metal, adding an air of mystery and a shifting ambience of emotion to their songs.

Although these songs are structured around verse-chorus with tributaries and tangents, the verses generally succeed introductory but related riffs and consist of riff pairs if not triads, building up to less frenetic choruses that nonetheless remain riff-centric and not vocal-dominated.

As this cycle spins up, much like in a Celtic Frost album, the earlier riff patterns both deconstruct and augment themselves with swelling melodic riffs at the same time percussion slows, creating a space for atmosphere that complements the initial energy and builds on its inertia in the style the Swedes perfected.

“Hybrid of Dismember and Dissection” is an apt description of the distorted guitar parts. Too bad about the happy bouncy clean guitar solos that may as well have come from some Italian power metal band. Too bad about the tribal drum interludes. There is no aesthetic coherence or continuity here, even if it is structurally interesting. Quite a shame, these guys could be good if they retained focus through the length of a song.
