Released in August of 1996, Monstrosity’s second effort Millennium is an album I personally hold in very high regards, considering I nearly spent eight months listening to it multiple times a day. This is an addictive album and each new listen made it clearer why this album stands head and shoulders above anything released under the term “technical death metal.”

Even if the main part of the work was composed between 1822 and 1824, the Symphony n°9 is the fruit of a long maturation which lasted more than thirty years. Thirty years for the idea of a symphony with choir to progressively take hold in the mind of Beethoven. Thirty years during which the music and the text of the “Ode to Joy” will evolve in parallel, each one gradually taking shape over the course of Beethoven’s compositions, before finally being reunited in their last symphony.

On April 24, this later-era death metal album will see re-issue in CD, LP, and digital formats. Demonstrating the fusion of Motorhead-styled aggressive punk-infused heavy metal with death metal, Divide And Conquer will come with three demo tracks, studio outtakes of “Choose Your Death” from the 1990 demo, a cover of At War “Ordered To Kill,” and original mixes of the tracks on the album.

Having release their last album eight years ago, Naglfar seemed senescent but has introduced its latest effort, Cerecloth, for release on May 8, 2020, via Century Media Records. Recorded and mixed at Wolf’s Lair Studio and mastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound, the album promises to follow previous Naglfar melodic black metal efforts.

Hammerheart Records opened pre-orders for the first Master album with several versions of the same songs, making this both a collector’s item and an impossible listen for the casual fan.

Like most of the death metal crowd, Nicke Andersson reverted to his hard rock and 70s stadium rock roots after participating on a few classic death metal releases. Once you have said the vital portion of your worldview in musical form, you are forced to articulate it, which is less fun than the unformed but emerging image.

While 2019 has shown that home studios are only getting better with the release of better emulators and cheaper “ready to record” prepackaged setups, the increase of quantity has not shown a proportionate increase in quality across the music spectrum. Metal has been in a particular weak state despite the best releases of the year being better than those of previous years, the overall quality was so low that even the present editor had to explore non-metal underground music in hopes of finding something of great quality. While such “expeditions” have been for the most part fruitless, the best of the year can only leave the metal listener with a sense optimism of what the new decade has to offer. Without any further ado, here is the best underground metal of 2019.
