Abazagorath
Tenebrarum Cadent Exsurgemus
[Elegy]

For a disc that has so far received so much positive feed-back, this can be classified as nothing less than a major disappointment. Abazagorath are yet another of the mass of boring, unoriginal, and horribly invoked black metal bands to release CD's over the course of the last few years. This disc is by far one of the more dull, and I found it almost impossible to listen to for than a handful of minutes at a time. Ranging from mid-paced to semi-fast paced, the band walk through more than forty-five minutes of what can be easily classified as "metal to fall asleep to". The music is basically based on heavy (and horribly generic) riffs, and some nicely produced drumming. Vocals are a tad deeper sounding than most black metal rasps, but are still as boring as one could expect. For the most part, I'd have to compare this band to some Satyricon LP's...and maybe even to some earlier Samael (that's only in some parts though). The band are also horribly funny when it comes to their lyrics. It's like they cut and pasted every stereotypical line they could think up...oh my. "On a depressive winter night, I wander through this majestic pagan forest, memories of ancient times fly into my mind"...is but one of many lines that seem quite comedic considering the band are from New Jersey in the United States. Elegy should be credited for putting some effort into the release though, since they've done a lovely lay-out and marketing job, and will hopefully redeem themselves with their upcoming Incantation and Judas Iscariot releases. Boring, boring, boring, and just another generic release that will quickly be tossed into the back of any collection. One thing that is worth mentioning though are the pictures...the band photo on the back of the tray is a fucking corker...I almost pissed myself laughing looking at it (the band look all surprised, as if the camera man had just flashed them :P)
