Absurd
Facta Luquuntur
[No Colours]

This is an interesting release...half raw black metal, and half Bathory-ish viking metal. This CD is one of those lovely "limited edition" releases, hand numbered and restricted to 500(yikes!!) copies. Packaging is similar to what No Colours strives for (i.e simple and no colour!), and contains a lovely painting of Thor doing what he does best with that hammer of his. Absurd are also notorious for having the line-up in jail for murder, as well as slipping the occasional racial remark (the controversy goes further with the swastika found on the cover, even though it's parts of the classic painting). The music is quite decent actually. It's nothing overly impressive, and at times quite boring, but it get's the job done... and leaves you feeling at least *somewhat* fulfilled. Part of the songs are simple and raw black metal, with pretty horrible vocals, but they do produce some interesting atmospheres and riffs. Track one for example, "Werwolf" (that's how it's spelled in German I suppose), is a nice Germanic-language piece, filled with a well-done atmosphere and some of the better black vocals found on the disc. The rest of the songs are quite similar to Bathory's viking period material. Clean singing, viking-ish (or something like that) guitar parts, and quite simple sounding. Although not even close to achieving Bathory's melodies and singing parts, the songs here are fairly decent, and keep the disc from being another one of those "boring" black metal albums. It must be clearly stated that this is pretty much an album for the black metal purists out there, since it doesn't have over the top song structures or production. Just simple, solid, and decent enough to listen to.

I felt that another thing had to be added to this review, (if not as a warning) namely the punk influence. Somebody mentioned to me that this reminded them of the band 'Discharge'. Personally, I have zero knowledge of punk music, and obviously can't comment on this. But obviously it does have a punk metal feel. As another person mentioned at my apartment once, while I was listening to one of their demos: "What is this shit, it's just punk music, with a few songs containing black metal vocals". This is very true! Punk music may fucking suck, and some of the more punk-ish tracks here REALLY do, but overall Absurd are excellent at creating raw black metal....hopefully they will stick with that style in the future (as displayed on the opening track). Generally, punks are fucking worthless subhuman hippies who deserve to be beaten in the street, while they beg and whine at me for 'spare change'. A punk influenced metal band, in my opinion, is no better than a goth influenced one!
