Mayhem
In Memorium
[Bootleg]

Mayhem have obviously become sort of a cult legend in the underground, mainly because of the extreme events surrounding them, rather than the excellent music they've created over their (very) long history. Over the years I've collected a decent amount of Mayhem related recordings, ranging from bootlegs, actual LP's, and compilation tracks. This is by far the best recording I have from them though, surpassing easily any of the other garbage bootleg's out there, and the fairly disappointing official albums from them. This particular (very nice) bootleg comprises of seven rehearsal tracks with dead on vocals, a comedic promo/intro, five studio rehearsal tracks with Grishnackh on bass, and two tracks with Peridition Herse vocalist Culto Culus on bass/vocals. Let's give this a general breakdown then, shall we? :)

Rehearsal '91 (tracks 1-7): This is fucking excellent, and captures a raw and violent live sound not found on the disappointing "Live in Leipzig" or other bootleg recordings. All of the tracks here are very classic, and the thick guitar sound, vacuum-sucking amp distortion, and brutal vox (which aren't too loud or too quiet) make for an excellent listen. Best sounding tracks are "Necrolust" (sound fast and very violent), "Pure Fucking Armageddon" (with some nice distortion and clear sounding drums), and "Chainsaw Gutsfuck" which sound so very brutal with this recording quality.

Track 8: A silly promo intro with the band singing about birds and clowns...and err... It's actually quite funny to tell you the truth, and sounds horribly drunken :)

Studio Rehearsal (tracks 9-13): This is fairly interesting. A studio rehearsal (presumably after the death of Dead) with Grishnackh (supposedly) on bass. Even though Dead is credited with vocals, none are found on these tracks, and because of that it's fairly interesting to hear Mayhem as an instrumental band only (especially when the fuck up multiple times). Recording level here is pretty crappy, and very mushy sounding. Some popular tracks, all from "De Mysteriis..."

Rehearsal '91 (tracks 14&15): These are the tracks that make the disc worth tracking down. Horrible (horrible!!) quality (you can hardly hear anything), but they have Peridition Herse vocalist Culto Culus on them which makes it quite the collector's bit. Culto sounds different than on his "Mala Fida" demo, and goes for more of a screechy Dead sound here. The sound cut's in and out, speakers sound like they're blowing, and the guitars become inaudible at times. Horrible, but still very interesting.

Well, this is one for fan's of Mayhem, and those interested in tracking down more rare recordings. Besides being really excellent sounding musically, you also get seventy plus minutes of rare-Mayhem recordings...nicely done for a bootleg.
