Darkthrone
Transilvanian Hunger
[Modern Invasion]

Darkthrone have always been quite the interesting band. All of their releases (excluding the horribly boring "Total Death") have been amazing in different fashions, and because of that have obviously given them a decent sized fan base. My personal favorite of all of the bands releases is "Transilvanian Hunger", simply because it's such a raw mess of creepy sounding and melodic feeling riffs. The music here follows a general pattern: Simple, repetitive riffs, tuned very high, fast paced and straightforward drumming, and horribly trollish sounding vocals. It works perfectly of course, and even though everyone out there complains about how horrible and badly made this album is, it should worshipped for it's ability to create audio excellence while still staying very simple. Culto's vocals are especially vile sounding on this release (eclipsed only by the near vomit like ones on "Panzerfaust") and guide the music at truly great and painful levels. Combined with the melancholic and even "cold" sounding riffs (which repeat themselves so much they create a near trance like sound), the album itself ends up being near perfect, and easily embodies pure hatred, evil, and in that respect, black metal as a genre.
