Beherit
Drawing Down the Moon
[Spinefarm]

Beherit are probably one of my all time favourite bands (well, at least in the top ten) during their metal years, and have reached levels beyond cult status in my book. They are the epitome of perfection in relation to the first wave of black/blast/post-grind (in reference to Impaled Nazarene, Blasphemy, Bestial Summoning, Abigail, etc). Although this style is obviously different than the Greek and Norwegian forms of black metal that were being developed in the early 90's, its still so horribly evil to listen to.

"Drawing Down the Moon" is a truly great album. While the earlier demos/promos and "The Oath of Black Blood" were terribly messy (yet they were still so very evil and excellent sounding), "D.D.T.M" is quite a bit tighter, and obviously more organized. Some of the intros/outros/ambient breaks/etc. on here are beyond chilling sounding, and combined with the sickly dark music, and of course Holocausto's "vomit vocals" make for a fantastic album. Everything here is dark and sick sounding, depressing, or simply strange. I really don't need to go on. If you haven't heard Beherit before, and enjoy my sometimes-bastard reviews, then by all means check them out, and worship. This album is a tad simpler to listen to/enjoy than "The Oath of Black Blood", but it still retains enough amazing qualities to make it no less than worthy.
