Dark Rise comes from Switzerland, a country not really famous for its numerous Extreme Metal bands. Switzerland has been known in the eighties and early nineties for its quality Thrash Metal and Black Metal bands, as Hellhammer / Celtic Frost, Samael, Apocalypse and Coroner. Since then nothing really new comes to mind, as the end of the nineties has only seen followers of the most successful of the above mentioned, Samael, with Alastis and Rain. Was there even a Death Metal band in the whole country ? I don’t know one… After Samael turned to Gothic Pop crap, I thought that brutality had totally disappear from this land, but Dark Rise turned me to be wrong.

This is a quite new Death Metal band, presenting here their first recording. This pro-printed self-produced MCD is enjoyable, featuring 6 songs of mid-tempo Death Metal with a rather deep and guttural voice. Nothing outstanding, nor really original, but riffs are well-thought and built, and the technical level is rather good. Sound is really honest for a first recording on CD.

The only (minor) drawback comes from the drums which have a “cheap” sound and sometimes are a little off-tempo at the end of some breaks. Next recording will need some more practice and more improvement in drums compositions.

Finally, Slaves Of Death is really pleasant to listen to. Good mark for the cover art (some gory details are hilarious), but no lyrics…
