In the late '80s there was a slew of extreme bands labelled grindcore: Carcass, Heresy, Macabre, Impetigo, Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Righteous Pigs, Unseen Terror, etc. Their influences were Michigan's Genocide/Repulsion's demo "Slaughter of the Innocent", Siege (their "Drop Dead" demo was a classic), Canada's Slaughter, japan's Otou (Anyone remember their two songs "I Like Killing" & "Werewolf Chaos" submitted to Metal Forces under the name Antichrist???)
The road split between those influenced either more by hardcore or metal. Carcass was definitely metal taken to a new level/depth. From the opening instrumental "Genital Grinder" to the last track, short bursts of divebombing guitar solos, gruesome gory vocals, disgusting lyrics based on & pics lifted from coroner/medical text books, bludgeoning blasting drums collided with crazy riffing to create the craziest, most insane, extreme, messy, nauseating album of all time. The 1988 debut SOUNDS like a mass murderer 'going postal'. Who would have have guessed it would influence the North American underground metal scene like it did?
The track "Splattered Cavities" gave an indication of what direction Carcass were heading in. The only thing that sucks is the generic cover art that replaced the pics of body parts on the re-issued cd's. What's up with that??? And lastly, even with the lyric sheet it's sometimes hard to follow as it sounds like corpses with dirt in their mouths. 1. 1:32 Genital Grinder
