Mütiilation
Remains of a Ruined, Dead, Cursed Soul
[Drakkar]

7 tracks, 43:07

(For those not familiar with the band: Mütiilation used to be part of the French "Les Légions Noires" BM circle, together with Vlad Tepes, Torgeist, and Belkètre, until guitarist/vocalist/drummer/songwriter Meyhna'ch committed suicide in '96 - which was obviously the end for Mütiilation. Les Légions Noires specialized in *extremely* low-fi, morbid misanthropic Black Metal, invariably recorded on 4 tracks, combined with a vehemently purist anti-trends, pro-satanic/occult non-compromising Black Metal attitude)

AAAARRRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! A new Mütiilation CD! Finally a successor of the insanely sick and morbid "Vampires of Imperial Blood" ('95) that still spins its circles at least weekly in my CD player - oh joy!

Actually, this is the material for Mütiilation's first CD "Evil, the Gestalt of Abomination", which was supposed to be released by a Columbian label in 1993, with two added bonus tracks from a post-"Vampires.." session in '96. If you liked "Vampires of Imperial Blood", you needn't read any further - order it immediately.

"Remains of a Ruined, Dead, Cursed Soul" is a logical predecessor of "Vampires..." in virtually all aspects. It's just as raw and sick, overall a bit slower and doomier, but the fast parts are still there, and it's easy to hear it's the same band. Still the slightly metallic, fuzzy and open guitar sound, the same simplistic drums (buried a bit more in the mix), and the lunatic ghoulish shrieks of Meyhna'ch - they're even better. Imagine a more suicidal and drug-induced version of Darkthrone's "Crossing the Triangle of Flames" - that's what Mütiilation sounds like.

The two tracks from '96 are a bit different: they're much faster, and use a drum computer. Meyhna'ch rasps rather than shrieks here, but the guitars sound the same as ever, and the result is equally morbid.

If you're, like me, one of the few people who can enjoy this kind of ultra-underground, unproduced, totally morbid Black Metal, you should definitely see a psychiatrist, and you should get this as fast as you can (the CD is limited to 1000). Otherwise, don't bother. As stated in the booklet: "None of those pieces has the pretention to give a new breath to Black Metal, it's just a reflection of dark past, remains of a ruined, dead, cursed soul, and also another reason for you to hate me..."
