Megadeth
Peace Sells...But Who's Buying
[Capitol]

It seemed like I was waiting forever for this album to be released in 1986, I think it finally hit the stores in September of that year. A lot of us were blown away for a long time. It was superior to their debut 'Killing is My Business...and Business is Good' due to the full, crunchier, professional production; as opposed to Killing's thinner, trebley, slash yer face, underground appeal.

Peace Sells utilized the best technology for Dave Mustaine's excellent songs. It was cleaner yet heavier, both in sound and riffing, as far as thrash/speed metal goes. Ok, I will agree they were appealing to a wider metal audience with this major label debut, and it's up to each individual whether or not they went "downhill". (There, does that cover my ass?)

Chris Poland's solos are great, even if his jazz background fucked up the band when they played concerts. Then again, the band were all on coke and heroin I heard.

It would be nice to get a hold of the original version of "Wake Up Dead" again when it was called "Blood and Honor" (any tape traders reading this?!??) "The Conjuring" has cool vocal effects. "Peace Sells" has pissed off lyrics appealling to Joe Average. "Devils Island" is about Alcatrazz. "Good Mourning/Black Friday" is about turning into a serial killer mutilating his victims. "Bad Omen" is the most different, staggard tune here. Played in an off-beat pattern (sort of like "Loved to Deth") til near the end when it twists back into the speed we are familiar with. The cover of Willie Dixon's "I Ain't Superstitious" (made famous by Jeff Beck) is actually pretty cool. Bluesy, than turning thrashy right at the end. "My Last Words" ends the album , and to this day is still one of my favourite tunes of all time. It's about the scene in the movie "Deerhunter" when Christopher Walken is playing Russian Roulette.

Musicianship is top notch. Drummer Gar Samuelson (R.I.P.), and bassist David Ellefson had hit their peak. I don't know how many will admit it, but if I had the chops and confidence that's displayed here by Megadeth, I would feel like a god and tell everyone to fuck off too.
