Yyrkoon
Oniric Transition
[Velvet]

I must commend Velvet Music on the packaging of this CD. It's well done and detailed, with a fat booklet and loads of nifty pictures. Yyrkoon play a very progressive form of black metal (like Arcturus sometimes), mixed with some faster stuff that reminds me of Enthroned (Bel), and even the occasional Morbid Angel riff. The solos and a good deal of the riffs (keyboards too) just reek of prog. While technical, and excellent composers, I find "Oniric Transition" to be more masturbation then metal.

There's a good deal of stuff that does work here, yes, but as a whole I just can't recommend this CD. Everyone here is proficient (extremely proficient), and they do understand how to make a song, but it just doesn't work as a mix. It tends to annoy as a matter of a fact, as the music never become memorable. It sounds like riff after riff, followed by solo, clean vocals, keyboards, and so on. Why waste hours preparing a dish that tastes like sand, when you can take a few minutes and come up with a rather tasty sandwich? I'm sorry I had to use that miserable excuse for an example, but it's none the less true!

I think bands like Arcturus and Covenant have proven that instrumental skill does not always mean fulfilling music, despite what the major mags and metal sheep tell you. Rather, as in the case of those bands and Yyrkoon, it can make a person wish they'd never picked up the disc...
