Algaion
Vox Clamentis
[Wounded Love]
Okay.. first it should be stated (as you will see in
future reviews) I am most definitely NOT a supporter
of Swedish black metal... for the most part, I REALLY
think the swedish scene is the most pathetic scene
ever.. each band trying its hardest to sound exactly
like Dissection or Marduk/Dark Funeral... terrible
really (especially since I do not like any of those 3
bands.. with the exception of Nightwing by Marduk)...
And while Algaion do little to change my opinion of
Swedish black metal, this mCD is definitely worthy of
purchase.. They are (yet another) melodic black metal
band, but they do not play in the dissection style..
instead using more chord progressions instead of
harmonies and what not (don't really know guitar
terms..).. The guitars here are played nicely, always
having a melodic sound, and do somewhat have an
original sound to them... kind of similar to Swedish
band Dawn (a band which I actually like.. a lot).. the
bass is hardly ever heard.. which I always think is
stupid.. the drumming is top notch (this country does
produce top notch drummers.. just no originality
whatsoever) and never misses a beat.. the vocals are
what makes the cd stand out, some will like this style
a lot, and some will straight up hate it.. but no one
can deny its a very original style of vocals (although
still having a black shriek sound to it)... and yes,
this mCD does really nothing too original, and can get
boring, it can also be a very good listen when you
feel like hearing something melodic without all the
bore (the 19 minute run time doesn't hurt either)...
Appeal: Fans of Swedish Melodic Black Metal
