Satyricon
Dark Medieval Times
[Moonfog]

This CD is the very essence of cold and evil Black Metal and Satyricon’s finest work by far. Satyricon, in my opinion, are by now completely dead and the new CDs that they keep putting out are a slap in the face to true Black Metal, but, regardless of my disdain towards their newer releases, this is a masterful work… for one thing, this CD gives off one of the coldest and most evil atmospheres I’ve ever heard. As for the music, this disc is the sensory equivalent of a war… the guitars sound utterly evil, the vocals are extremely grim, and the drums are raging and ever-present. The riffs fit the projected atmosphere of the music perfectly and sound nice, though they aren’t overly technical or fast… The Vox are also done extremely well, Satyr has always had a nice voice, and this CD is no exception (I do, however, suspect that some pretty major effects were used on the vox during the recording). The production, too, fits the projected atmosphere of the music and is quite good; you can usually hear everything that’s going on. There are also a lot of acoustic and ambient breaks in the songs that positively bring to mind Burzum, in a good way, as they are played well and were added in good taste. This CD is strongly recommended to anybody who listens to Black-Metal and wants some of the best music the genre has to offer. Their bast work yet (though I don’t think that they’ll ever top this offering with the crap music that they’re playing now…) and a masterpiece.

Pros: Good Singing, cold and evil atmosphere, great drumming, nice inclusion of acoustic parts, good production.
Cons: Some pretty happy riffs once in a while…
Style of music: Cold and grim Norwegian Black Metal.

Overall: fucking supreme, but not entirely perfect… 9.9/10
