VON
Satanic Blood
[Hellspawn]

The biggest cult release to ever hit the Black Metal scene, and some fucking superb music… but before analyzing the music I would like to clear up a popular misconception…

VON does not stand for ‘Victory Orgasm Nazi’… In the British metal magazine ‘Kerrang!’(around 1993) VON was pictured as a representative of the Norwegian Back Metal scene, even though they aren’t Norwegian… Varg Vikernes (of Burzum fame, of course) was ‘quoted’ as saying that VON stood for ‘Victory Orgasm Nazi’, when what really happened was that he spelled out the name of the band for them like… ‘V as in victory, O as in orgasm, N as in Nazi’ (just like you might say ‘S as in Sauron’), and the ‘Kerrang!’ journalists misinterpreted it, that is, they took what Varg said literally. That is the entire story behind the ‘Victory Orgasm Nazi’ myth.

As for the music, well this is a classic cult release, and something no true Black Metal fan should be without. The production could have been better, but as it is, I can’t complain. One thing to remember before buying this disc is that this was recorded on a 4-track by a very old and musically primitive band, so if you expect Emperor style riffs and production you will certainly be disappointed. The music itself is quite dark and vile, I’ve no doubt at all that this music (along with Venom, Hellhammer, and, of course, the almighty Bathory.)was a major inspiration for the Norwegian scene. The lyrics are about Satanism, and are actually quite simple, still they are good and to the point, once again, I’ve got no doubt that the lyrics were also inspiration for the Norwegian scene. The band broke up a little while after recording this demo but thank Master Satan that they put this work of art out before breaking up… Buy this or DIE!!!

Pros: Supreme music, cool lyrics, great vox, cult status
Cons: Somewhat poor production
Style of Music: BLACK METAL!!!
Will likely appeal to: Everybody who listens to true Black Metal

Overall: Superb – 9.4/10
