Forgotten Woods
Sjel av Natten
[No Colours]

I think this demo (from '94) has been self-released, re-released as a demo by Pagan Records (back when they ONLY did demos), put on CD by Pagan, put on CD by No Colours, and re-released on CD by another label that I can't quite remember.

Anyway, it's finally on (orange/cream colored!) vinyl, and limited to 300 copies.

Alot of people believe that 'Sjel av Natten' is the band's finest moment, but I personally think that their entire career has been fantastic. Sure, there's the obvious cloning of Burzum here and there, but the band are obviously more influenced by 70s prog-rock and folk music then the Count ever was. The riffs are less straight forward, use more reverb, and at times sound unlike anything done in black metal. The vocals are a clean copy of early Burzum, sure, but who doesn't appreciate that type of delivery?

The (15 minutes or so) title track starts out the album, and the main riff is a tad more rockin' sounding version of 'Dimensions of the Blackest Dark' from their debut album.

And talking about 'Dimensions...' (probably their darkest track to be heard on any of their albums), 'En natt med storm og ravners skrik' challenges that track for bleakest sounding FW song ever. Clean sounding, heavy on the reverb guitars duel with Thomas's nasty vocals, with some light chanting in the background.

A worthy black metal recording, and the tag of 'Winter Metal' applies here rather nicely.
