Macabre
Unabomber
[Hammerheart]

Always a perennial favourite with this reviewer, Macabre is, after Necrophagia, the very foremost murder/gore metal merchants in the business. Lest you jump to conclusions, Macabre sounds nothing like the dozens of faceless gore grind drones being exhumed from the American ‘death metal’ circuit. Instead, this is a flawless amalgam of classic ‘70s rock, Motorhead, hints of old death/thrash, Dead Kennedys and psychedelia, all topped off with Murder Corporation’s fiercely individualistic and insane vocal spew.

They term themselves as ‘Murder Metal’ simply because it’s exactly what they churn out. Psyched-out, decked-out, incredibly strange death/thrash with a lyrical obsession with serial killers, of which Dahmer, David Brom and Ed Gein are most apparent on this release. Macabre are an underground institution unto themselves, crafting incredibly infectious, strictly tongue-in-cheek songs that rock, incite laughter and warrant constant pressing of the repeat button. Such is the infectious quality of Macabre’s music, an element that makes Macabre a sore thumb in defiance of a banal extreme music industry, and definitely one of the most identifiable acts today.

Murder Corporation has a larynx like no other, and along with Gezol of Sabbat, adopts perhaps the zaniest vocal style you’re likely to hear in extreme music. Like a cross-pollination of Mike Patton and Jello Biafra, I would say. With absolutely no regard for technique, enunciation and such wankery, our man MC wails and barks in the most dramatic and endearing of manners. Such a vocal style is a perfect complement to the ridiculously catchy, riff-driven music. Macabre know how to write a mean riff, and employ this to lethal effect in the opening track’s *amazing* chorus passage.

Undoubtedly one of the most unique and individual outfits out there, this is yet another testament to Macabre’s subversive, yet enduring genius, and yet another appeal to the uninitiated to stray from the banal idiocy of the general ‘black metal’ circle and sample something fiercely original. Recommended to absolutely anyone and everyone, if deranged, depraved fun is your mug of ale. I can’t wait to hear their latest offering.
