Orkus
The Gate
[Undercover]

Undercover Records has been a subject of some scrutiny lately, and for good reason. After putting out a Witchburner record that I thoroughly enjoyed, they put out two abysmally hapless wastes of digital space in Zarathustra and Thy Majesty, before getting back on track with Frozen Illusion’s convincing offering of old school death metal. As I’ve been watching the label’s growth with considerable interest and this came rather highly recommended from a trusted compatriot, I picked this mini CD up almost immediately after I saw it.

Orkus is a young German black metal outfit peddling a rather raw and thrashy brand of black metal that also exhibits the occasional dose of melodic proficiency. Rather straightforward Nordic-flavoured black metal is the modus operandi for the most part here, and I’d draw a parallel between them and Warloghe ,Sweden’s Watain and even Sorhin in parts, though not quite as good as either band. Melody, as mentioned before, is quite apparent here, with plenty of melody-infused, thrashy sections popping up in between tracks.

Rather unremarkable and generic, this disc’s function fades into the background as it trudges on, but there is a fair bit of integrity and underground ethos pervading this release, which I can only applaud. There’s quite a large margin and capacity for improvement as far as this band is concerned, and I do look towards their direction for vastly improved material the next time around. A lot better than the pretentious nonsense that Darker Than Black is unleashing upon the world, at least.
