Katatonia
Tonight's Decision
[Peaceville]

The latest CD from Sweden's masters of gloom metal. Or "goth rock", whatever you prefer.

Jonas leaves the drumming to Dan Swano on this record so he can give all his attention to the vocals, and it shows. His vocals are dark, sad, and (gasp) clean throughoutt the albums 50+ minutes. But also excellent.

The riffs (courtesy of Anders Nystrom formerly "Blakheim") are both highly original, and very catchy.

Lyrically, this album captures all the depression of earlier Katatonia records with only brief glimpses of hope on "Right Into the Bliss".

Some purists will call this "pop rock" due to the catchiness of the songs and the all clean vox, but no other pop rock album i've ever heard has made me hide the razor blades before listening.

B+
