Tormentor

Here is, finally, the much anticipated return of one of the world's most seminal Black Metal act, Tormentor. These Hungarians are best known for their Anno Domini album (re-released through Nocturnal Art a few years back), and that release alone put them in absolute CULT status. Also, many of you already know that Attila Csihar did vocals for Mayhem's godlike album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. He also did backing vocals for Aborym and had his own industrial Skinny Puppy-ish group entitled Plasma Pool years back. But on with the new Tormentor!

I don't quite know how to describe this album, to be honest. Let me first say that I fucking LOVE this release. My problem is how to classify the music. I don't really think this could be identified as Black Metal, although some of it is sort of close. Alot of it is very atmospheric, with alot of keyboards and catchy melodies. Some of it is even "rock & roll" and "blues" style music. This sounds really stupid, but you must hear it, because it is all still very dark and excellent in all aspects. The most prodominant aspect is the use of many many melodies, making this release have a very "epic" type of feel. Be forwarned, however, this is not the Tormentor of the past, but they aren't even trying to be. And of course, no matter how catchy or melodic the music is, Attila's vocals are as sick as always...there is absolutely no mistaking his voice. It seems to me that this has 2 original members from the old line-up, and 2 new ones. At times this release actually makes me laugh. I don't know if Attila is joking around with his vocals or what, but it can get pretty amusing. It was such a shock to listen to for the first time, but I liked it from the intro to the end, and it gets better each time. I don't know, I think perhaps you should listen to this before you purchase it, because there is a big chance that you might be dissapointed if you are expecting Anno Domini part 2. There are many Medieval sounding sections, and some of the songs musically are VERY reminiscent of Mercyful Fate from the Melissa era. For the most part, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you approach this with an open mind. Afterall, I think anything Attila does is amazing, and this is no exception. In my eyes, he has done no wrong yet. I recommend this to everyone, but just remember not to expect raging satanic Black Metal, 'cause you will surely be disappointed! I think Attila is one of the most innovative, original, and "crazy" members of the underground scene. Buy this now, and get sucked into Tormentor's insanity! 10/10. On Avantgarde Music.
