What can I say? If there is an album that is the exact representation of what real black metal should sound like, this is it!
The sound is so damn raw you'd think that only seriously fucked-up persons/unhuman beings could have created this. But wait...this is is exactly what the whole album is aiming at and it's BRILLIANT!! I dare say this is the best (ok...one of the best) black metal albums of all times! This is ugly, hateful, & misanthropic to the core! The overall darkness surrounding the entire album is simply breathtaking! "Transilvanian Hunger" is the darkest emotions from the blackest pits of a soul ever to be recorded. This is HATE transformed into music. But even from amidst all the wrathful misanthropy, an incredibly strong feeling of sorrow emerges...especially present on the title track and "Skald av Satans Sol", the whole thing is simply overwhelming in it's mournfullness. The cold and ungodly raw sound just adds to the atmosphere. This release wouldn't have been the same with good sound. It would have destroyed the whole feeling.
This album is precisely what DARKTHRONE is all about. I like all their albums, but this is surely the best one without a doubt. Never has a black metal band managed to create such misanthropic atmospheres before.
