In Memorium
An Ancient Word
[Moribund]
Very rarely does "USBM" get as symphonic as this 4 song demo-type MCD from Seattle's In Memorium.
While still somewhat brutal like their peers, they try to vary their approach with short blasting sections, slow atmospheric parts, and driving mid tempo parts.
The mixing job on this CD, however, sucks. The keyboards and drums are way too high up in the mix, while the guitars in some sections seem to take a back seat to everything else.
The vocals are rasped which suit the almost implicit death/thrash feel of the songs.
The drumming is excellent in that sloppy fashion (I'm not sure if that was intentional) that is so rarely employed. I just wish the drummer was a little less liberal in his drum fills because they get annoying.
In general what we have here is nothing earth-shattering, but a good start for this band.
A more suitable mix would have definitely made this a much more enjoyable release.
