Agatus
Dawn Of Martyrdom
[No Colours]

According to the band, this version I'm holding is a bad bootleg(!) put out by No Colours Rec. Despite the simple looking b/w layout and minimal liner notes, this disc contains 3 parts: track 1 - 10 taken from the official Dawn Of Martyrdom CD; 11-13 taken from 93's demo Night Of The Dark Ages and number 14 was a promotion track from 1993.

Musically this is very typical Greek sounding, but Agatus perfectly mixed some mediaeval melodies and faster plays together with slower yet more epic parts, which somehow differ them from their countrymates Necromantia, Rotting Christ or Varathron. Keyboards were used here, but they only appear to make this CD more memorable and give listeners a dream-like soundscape. (Personally I'm not totally against black metal with keyboards, but it's must be done with class and shall NEVER overbear other instruments! But 99% of today's bands just failed to do so.) The only comparison I can think of is Zemial(yes, both bands share some common members)but the guitars here are much thicker with a bit less traditional sound.

Overall this is a very solid release and should be enjoyed(get the original CD or LP!!) by every fan of Greek Black Metal. Also there will be a new album and some vinyls out later through Iron Pegasus, support this long running cult!
