Faustcoven
Satanic Doom
[Independent]

I really love it when bands write their own reviews for me in their manifesto/liner notes:

"I perform Black Metal to penetrate the very marrow of the listener with ugliness and blasphemy and to pay my homage to the great metal of old, not to partake in some gothic crossdressing party!"

Faustcoven is the one-man project of one Gunnar Hansen who hails from Norway, and you can hear the old sounds of the old black metal masters all through the music on the demo. Dense, cold, heavy riffing that owes as much to Black Sabbath as to Bathory or Darkthrone just penetrates your brain with a slow but unrelenting onslaught of black metal in the finest Northern tradition. No extra frills like keys or whining are present, just the riffs, the drums, maybe a rumbling bass, and some great Under a Funeral Moon-era Darkthrone-ish vocals. There's also a great awareness of doom metal here, with slow and mid-tempos abounding--that's probably what keeps it unique and gives the fresh spin to the Norse black metal tradition. And it fucking works, too. I'd hate to list best tracks because the three originals are really all of similar quality. There's also a demented, doomy cover of Venom's "Warhead" and an intro and outro, all clocking in at a shade under 20 minutes of some of the best modern black metal from a new band I've ever heard.

It should be noted that the demo is a CDR, but is available for only $5 and comes in a neat homemade black cardboard slipcase and with a fold-out of liner notes. E-mail Herr Hansen at gunnah@chembio.ntnu.no and prepare to have your soul fucking raped by Satan!
