Black Millenium (Grimly Reborn)
[Drakkar]

"Black millenium (Grimly reborn)" is the 3rd full-length CD of MUTIILATION. It is presented by Mordred (the single soul behind MUTIILATION now) as a proof of the existence (in 2001) of the BLACK LEGIONS movement, and a proof to all the kids who pollute the so-called "black metal scene" at the beginning of the new millenium that the old bands of the style are still alive and will not let "posers" and "children" kill the style from withtin. The release of this new CD was not a big surprise as the band released the "New false prophet" EP in Y2K, and also appeared with a new unreleased track on Drakkar's compilation CD "The return of darkness and hate" one year later. So one could imagine this 3rd CD would be released soon. This new album features 9 tracks (including the famous "New false prophet", already appearing on the self-titled EP), and the sound is similar to the one on the latest EP, which makes me think most of the songs were recorded at the same time, in 2000. I have to admit I like the first track of this CD. It's the only one that manages to reach the level of depression and melancholy of "Vampires...". But that's all ! There are too many tracks really uninteresting ("No mercy for humans", "New false prophet") and this band's new effort appears "tasteless" after several listenings. It's too similar to the EP, and far away from the great tracks of "Vampires..." or "Remains...". But even worse than the music itself, there are many disappointing points coming with this CD. First, the pictures are totally ridiculous for a band belonging to a kind of "Elite" of Black metal bands ! I've always seen "mysterious" pictures on the BLACK LEGIONS' releases, and here you can see Mordred dressed in leather, chains, spikes and sitting on a wheelchair ! Strange for a band supposed to be serious when it comes to True Black Metal affairs... In addition to this, Mordred is the one who appears with a childish attitude when he talks about people who destroy the "True Black Metal Scene". Hey, too many bands are saying this, I'm sure next time even DIMMU BORGIR will include a sentence in that vein in their new CD ("support only true ungerground bands" or something like that !). The worse thing is that, nowadays, the bands who spend their time complaining about how "True black Metal" is that band and how "Poser" is this one are usually the ones who act like children, they have a very shitty attitude and this is not Black Metal in my opinion. Even Euronymous had realised it was useless to hunt "poser bands", that good bands should concentrate on their own music, as good bands would survive any trend whereas the other ones will disppear after one or two CDs... But it seems that some minds will never change, unfortunately... I'm sure if MÜTIILATION was not labelled as a BLACK LEGIONS' band they would not sell the 1000 copies of this album so easily and so quickly...
