I think the Pantera to nu-metal spectrum failed. That is, it was trendy for awhile, but failed to achieve the status of enduring joy for people. Looking back at nu-metal now is like looking back at all the colored transparent plastic objects like iMacs from the 1990s. Cute, but no longer fascinating, which means it was a product of its time.
