Hirayasumi (2025)

The name translates to “regular day off” or other notions of a break from the manic pace of society, and this defines the charters involved, especially Hirohito the protagonist, who has essentially dropped out of the rat race to enjoy normal life to the dismay of all of those around him.

This soap opera told in sixteen-minute segments resembles more of a Hallmark Channel production than a daytime television version, all very innocent, and focused on only a few characters as they try to find a place in a modern life defined by boring corporate jobs.

Like much of postmodern literature, these narratives focus on a demented love triangle: job-purpose-pleasure. The pleasure is taking in the little things in life and enjoying existence itself, the job obscures purpose which is real work, and everyone is trying to find a balance despite jobs wanting dominance.

Similar to films such as Slacker and Repo Man or books like Whatever and The Pump-House Gang, this series shows us the drop-outs of life who are able to observe how broken modernity is, yet still need a place within it to be able to eat, live, and have families.

When presented simply, this seems to be the obvious, but the writers cover both good and bad with all of the options, showing not so much clarity as ambiguity, which reveals how the false simplicity of both jobs and dropping out has its limits.

Not sure how relevant it is, but have you watched wenders’ perfect days?

    1. Let me ask Claire. She knows all that high cinema shit. I just know what I like.

the best dropout movie is Falling Down, just skip all the scenes with his wife and her emotional reactions.

I think not, the scenes of the wife show she has fucked her husband over grossly and that her divorce attorney suggested she get a restraining order for no reason beyond that he lost his job and was prone to raising his voice due to the stress. This situation would have been temporary had she not been an empowered woman who demands constant perfection from her husband, she could not ride out a rough patch and overreacted which in turn ruined his life. I’ve seen multiple similar situations with friends and family where the man is completely destroyed by a fickle, weak willed wife who has all the incentive to divorce while the man has to go almost below zero at a starting over point with his knees broken. And in general I don’t blame anyone for dropping out or not trying hard in this ripoff modern society where everything is rigged against you. How many smart, observant and creative people I’ve known who really have nowhere to fit in this lame world. I will say personally, it is not hard to buy some land and set it up how you want, you will not be buying a mountainous paradise on prime real estate but I got a patch of forest with a pond and it provides total sacred solitude in the woods when I need to go for a stroll or just stand in some trees for some hours, if you’re willing to grind and save for a while, just stay away from marriage and don’t knock anyone up. Unless you can make that work for you, it’s a risky gamble these days. I haven’t seen many winners.

Yeah she annoys the shit out of me which I guess is the point. I’m a city dweller but the long game is to get some land. Ive chased enough tail at this point and concluded that the overwhelming majority of women are more talented at distraction and wasting time on pleasure than anything else. All I give a fuck about these days is honing the mind, body and soul mainly through art and fitness.

        1. My new rule on the Woman Question: s/women/humans/ and see if it resonates. Your third sentence surely does.

          1. 666 says:

not sure what you mean. that third sentence applies to humans in general yeah. but it’s usually necessary to lead women, even the good ones, or else they self destruct. not that i have a problem with that, but it’s a chore.

            1. Sex, caste, ethnicity, individuality… genetics rules us. If we work with it, it benefits us for time immemorial.

A movie about fishing… why didn’t you say so?!? I’m all in of course lol!

    1. There is a lot of fishing, very true.
