They entirely compromised the British intelligence establishment, the nuclear program, and eventually, the CIA. The study of their personalities and the key events that sent this disaster stumbling on to its lugubrious conclusion (and the sad lonely deaths of the spies) drive this mellow but active film.

For the record, I’m not against advancing technology, nor am I advocating for the control of technology in the sense of enforced luddism. Control, itself a tool and monopolized by modern governments, is only required when civilization has become rotten, i.e. modernity. We can have the technology and actively pursue it, but along with it, a strong culture with robust organization is required to weed out the bad actors and to sustain (to borrow from Stevens) its transcendent goals to avoid or minimize the unforeseen consequences. Technology serves its use so long as it remains a tool of civilization and not its master.
The body is a technology and its creations are extensions of itself, itself being an extension. It appears to me that technology is not concerned with the singularity of the subject. So we will see.

There’s a tired observation spouted by some comics about Ring cameras, with the joke being that all it provides is an opportunity to witness someone stealing your stuff with no recourse. Observing crime is very different than addressing it in a meaningful way.

Unless these magical cameras that stop crime from happening (somehow…) are capable of firing bullets while an offense is in progress, you won’t get much anything useful out of it. It’s definitely not a solution – just an after the fact documentation of what happened – and not even much of a deterrent. Maybe chat with a retail business owner constantly dealing with theft, or someone whose car got stolen from their driveway and ask how much footage of the crime did for them.
If you want to prevent people from fucking with you if you’re living in a shitty area for whatever reason, I’d suggest promoting things like castle law and open carry law.
I’m a cop and can tell you for very certain that 9/10 serious infractions caught on camera are effectively followed up (even package theft from porches caught on Ring etc.), and probably 8/10 of that 9/10 get hit with enforcement measures. Meanwhile 0/10 infractions commited without a camera present get any follow ups. So yes of course a camera doesn’t prevent the crime in the moment. The point is that the criminal is convicted later, restitutions are made best as can be, and word spreads very quickly that you don’t fuck with the monitored property. Criminals are opportunists primarily and the ones out there stealing stuff right now are very calculating risk takers. The ones who aren’t are already dead or in prison.

But you did leave out crucial aspects regarding this matter: the demographics of where one happens to live, what the relevant circumstances are regarding police staffing, careless governance, social benefits that draw people in who really don’t care about laws that are being poorly enforced (if at all) etc.

A sad update on this topic: Ten stabbings in the UK (one of the most surveilled places in the world) just took place on a train headed to London. Lives will probably be lost.
