Metal Listening Night (January 24, 2026)

With the aid of friends from the Shitposter Movie Night Crew, I will be hosting a “metal listening night” on their server where we tackle classics like Sepultura Beneath the Remains, Therion Beyond Sanctorum, Enslaved Vikinglgr Veldi, and DRI Four of a Kind as vital pieces of the metal history canon.

Catch us at 6:30pm CST on VideoFrens where we will listen to these classic albums together and consume the good and the weak.

Expect insane blasphemies, logical realities, dissident pluralities, pragmatic consequentialism, and opposition to the gods of the symbols through gods of the blood, cosmos, and soil. Be prepared for churches to burn, flags to fall, and nuclear missile trails to cross the sky.

Join us!

  1. I, Observer says:

    Bitchin’! \m/
I would’ve preferred Schizophrenia be covered rather than Beneath the Remains, but it still sounds like it’s going to be a hoot.

  2. Freya Helvig says:

It took me some time to arrive at this juncture, but here are my favorite albums in no order:

    1 Therion – Beyond sanctorum
    2 Darkthrone – Transilvanian Hunger
3 Dismember – Like an Everflowing Stream
4 Emperor – In the Nightside Eclipse
5 Slayer – Reign in Blood
6 Morbid Angel – Altars of Madness
    7 Incantation – Onwards…
    8 Gorgoroth – Pentagram
9 Sacramentum – Far Away from the Sun
10 Suffocation – Effigy of the Forgotten

On a secondary level, best electronic (psytrance) albums:

    1 Pleiadians – IFO
    2 Darshan – The Awakening
3 Etnica – Juggling Alchemists under the Black Light
    4 Xenomorph – Cassandra’s Nightmare
5 Ghreg on earth – Sigilweaver
    6 Paradise Connection – selftitled
    7 Dimension 5 – Transdimensional
    8 Psykovsky – Debut
9 Electric Universe – One Love
    10 Doof – Let’s turn on

If you don’t know these albums, you’re living under a rock and haven’t lived…

    1. Cynical says:

Antichrist is better than Pentagram, Hell Awaits is better than Reign in Blood, and Abominations of Desolation and Blessed Are the Sick are both better than Altars of Madness.

      1. classic metal > death metal says:

Blessed Are The Sick? Slightly higher

        Abominations is, well, an abomination.

    2. I learned a lot by looking at what I actually listened to, versus what I thought was the idea.

      1 Therion – Beyond sanctorum
      2 Darkthrone – Under a Funeral Moon
      3 Carnage – Dark Recollections
      4 Emperor – Enslaved split
5 Slayer – Show No Mercy
6 Morbid Angel – Abominations of Desolation
      7 Incantation – Onwards…
      8 Gorgoroth – Pentagram
9 Sacramentum – Far Away from the Sun
10 Suffocation – Effigy of the Forgotten

No disagreements with the rest but gotta throw in Infester, Gorguts, Pestilence, Sinister, Asphyx, Deicide, Atheist, At the Gates, Morpheus Descends, Cianide, Demigod, Amorphis, and a few others.

      1. Freya Helvig says:

Minor disagreements are fine, and in fact encouraged. Homogenized perfectionism is not reality, that’s why everything is dictinct in existence (i.e cats are not dogs).

What does matter is a push towards a general direction. I like “Altars” better than “Abominations” and “Nightside” over the split because I subjectively prefer more polished “official” sounding production that reverberates nicely with high quality headphones, and to top that off I like detailed Necrolord style cover artwork.

But regardless, most bands/releases promoted here are good enough for me at the end of the day. It doesn’t matter if we’re doing an Entombed vs Carnage vs Dismember contest. They’re all good/similar. I like the latter one slightly better because it has more melodic variety

        1. 666 says:

Over the years I’ve gone from favoring altars, to abominations, to blessed, and back to altars. Blessed and altars are both unusually coherent as full albums, but I too prefer the production of altars and for my money, its just more intense.

      2. Altarboys of Madness says:

Why did you niggas abbreviate “Onwards…” but fully write out Abominations of Desolation

        and Effigy of the 4got10

        C’mon guys get realist

    3. trad > death says:

Angel Witch- Angel Witch (fuck your demos)
Bathory- Under The Sign Of The Black Mark
      Death- Scream Bloody Gore
      Deicide- Legion
Dissection- Storm Of the Light’s Bane
Helloween- Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II
Judas Priest- Unleashed In The East
      Kreator- Pleasure To Kill
      Morbid Angel- Altars of Madness
Ozzy Osbourne- Bark At The Moon

    4. Freya Helvig says:

I feel I need an -alternative- top 10 as a part 2; because I need to do the *others* some justice as well, but note that the list is still subjective:

      1 Necrophobic – Darkside/Nocturnal Silence
      2 Imprecation – Any
3 Blaspherian – Infernal warriors of death
      4 Antaeus – Any
      5 Angelcorpse – First 3 LP’s
      6 Sinister – First 3 LP’s
7 Celtic Frost – To Mega Therion
      8 Possessed – Seven Churches
9 Demoncy – Joined in Darkness/Commencement of the Dark Crusades
10 Obituary – Cause of Death

      Now I’m pretty happy.

      1. trad > death says:

Darkside is stupidly underrated. IMO it’s better than Nocturnal Silence (calm the fuck down TNS is still a 10/10)

        1. Freya Helvig says:

That’s because Necrophobic is too great for most people, including this site, and on top of that the band’s popularity is generally overshadowed by the likes of Dark Funeral (which I moderately enjoy the early albums of).

To fit into the clique here you have to ramble on religiously about stuff like Sammath, Beherit and Asphyx; which are decent bands, but nowhere near top tier in my book.

          1. trad > death says:

The fuck does Sammath even mean? It sounds like Sammy Hagar fronting Van Halen back when they were called Mammath in the mid 70s than anything evil.

  3. Smeghead says:

    Very cool. Will attend.

  4. Retardol 500mg says:

The only thing that is going to be discussed here is how insignificant pieces of garbage you are.

    1. Anonnnnn says:

      Rude.

    2. AntiLife says:

Metal themes like human insignificance did come up, yes. But only a little.

  5. Ed Teutal says:

Dang I missed this. Is there an archived version available?

      1. Ed Teutal says:

Apologies for the bran dead question, but is there a server you’d recommend? I’m super new to the fediverse.

        1. To me, there are only two time-proven answers: annihilation.social and fsebugoutzone.org but I am also fond of poster.place and neondystopia.world.

  6. RichardA says:

Who cares when MEGADETH released a new album rock on Brother Dave
