I’d say Blaspherian, Vallenfyre, Wormrot, GridLink, Disma, Craft, Sorcier des Glaces, and Midnight Odyssey all had a pretty strong showing this year. I personally enjoyed the two new Burzum albums, but I can see why many of those who frequent this site might dislike them. New Cianide and Autopsy albums were disappointments, for me at least.

  2. Václav says:

New Autopsy sounds too clean and digital, but is OK otherwise. 2nd Necros Christos is solid. If someone had re-released Prophecy of Doom, I’d mind them here (doing anyway). Void Meditation Cult were mentioned elsewhere, who put out a demo that is neat. Death Strike has finally been carved into vinyl.

  3. metal R.I.P. says:

    It all sucks

  4. shit taste detected says:

    >I’d say Blaspherian, Vallenfyre, Wormrot, GridLink, Disma, Craft, Sorcier des Glaces, and Midnight Odyssey

    oh wow

  5. Trust me says:

Blind Guardian : technically perfect, polished but still agressive, the construction of songs is nothing “cut and paste” once you actually listen to the multiple layers so it’s actually metal, and the lyrics have at minimum as much sense as everything emperor or Gentle Giant relased when they were good.

  6. brutal slayer of christians, noble hessian warrior of death says:

    Disma – Towards the Megalith
Blaspherian – Infernal Warriors of Death
    Flame – March into Firelands
Necros Christos – Doom of the Occult
Antediluvian – Through the Cervix of Hawaah (PURE BESTIAL ASSAULT)

All of these are worthy albums, but we must not forget that there still remains one more colossal effort to be released – the mighty WRATHPRAYER debut which will be another fine slab of South American brutality!!!!

Also lest we forget that the beginning of 2012 will bring forth the most sonically devastating metal effort in years…REVENGE – SCUM.ERADICATION.COLLAPSE IT WILL BE THEIR HEAVIEST ALBUM YET AND WILL CRUSH POSERS LIKE NEGRUVODA TO DEATH

  7. Vajazzle Prosack says:

Disma sounded good at first listen, but then didn’t stay in rotation for me.

The new Autopsy was a huge disappointment. It was messy in composition, no nuance and kind of preaching to the choir. Needs another listen, I guess.

Antediluvian did not hold up to repeated listens in the past. Maybe.

Blind Guardian: quite possible, if you can get over the prancing and glistening drama.

  8. Asgard says:

    Been a pretty good year

    Mussorgski- Chaos And Paranormal Divinity
    Baring Teeth- Atrophy
    Beherit- The devils studio
    Ulcerate- Destroyers of all
    Mitochondrion- Parasignosis
Sorcier Des Glaces- The puressence of primitive forests
    Blut Aus Nord- 777Sect(s), Desantification
    Disma- Towards the megalith

  9. brutal slayer of christians, noble hessian warrior of death says:

I completely forgot about the first Beherit album. Fucking darkness incarnate!!!

  10. Jim Necroslaughter says:

    Prosanctus Inferi
    Blaspherian
    Cianide
    Beherit

  11. Luboš says:

Yes, Beherit had an interesting release, especially for the historians here. Think they’re due for new material, just like Divine Eve still are. Looking forward to Revenge, too.

All in all, we’ll perhaps know which is the best 2011 release when listening to it still in five years or so.

  12. Oh wait... Sorry, I forgot you're all virgins... says:

So guys, what was the best pussy you had in 2011?

  13. hurrr says:

    ^ lol someone’s sexually insecure

As for my picks – Disma, Prosanctus Inferi, Midnight Odyssey, Cianide, Blaspherian, Autopsy, Gridlink, and Impiety all had good releases this year.

  14. MastodonFan says:

Infernal Warriors of Death. No contest.

  15. I live in the UK says:

    Fanatical Beerdrinkers – Molotov’s Cock (excellent retro-thrash)
Genderbender – Pierced Through Walls Of Flesh (technical death metal, think Cynic meets Psycroptic)
Unholy Buttsex – Rectal Explosions (australian war metal, nuff said)
Poopfarts – War Inside My Pants (I can only compare this to Frank Zappa making a death metal album)
Also the Liturgy/Boy Lovers Society split is pretty good.

  16. Lady Gaga says:

    Blaspherian, Cianide & Bahimiron.

  17. Negru Voda says:

Blind Guardian – At the Edge of Time
LMFAO – Sorry for Party Rockin’

  18. If you don't put it in at least the top 3 I will be PISSED. says:

    Cianide – Gods of Death

This takes the number one position IMO. Some great responses already (hi Neg_voda!!).

  19. @ what others have said says:

-WRATHPRAYER will fall short. this band is just a collage of noise and random riffs. ‘
-REVENGE may indeed be the best release of the year
-BEHERIT technically shouldn’t count (that includes re-releases like DEATHSTRIKE)
-have not listed to ANTEDILUVIAN”S full length. The last EP was a savage execution but fell short of the “under wing” EP
-what Vajazzle Prosack said about DISMA. It fell VERY quickly out of rotation
    -AUTOPSY lost their spirit
-NECROS CHRISTOS surprised me with a great album but it still fell out of rotation fast
    -BURZUM slightly improved
-BLUT AUS NORD gets the Noktorn treatment of “kinda cool I guess”
-need to give the new MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY, SORCIER DES ICECREAM, and PROSANCTUS INFERI a listen

    top 3:

    1.Cianide “Gods of Death”
    2.Blaspherian”INFERNAL WARRIORS OF DEATH”
    3. Antediluvian “Revelations in Excrement”

  20. don't listen to metal says:

Metal is terrible music, it encourages dangerous values such as rebellion and nonconformity. For the already damaged and under-socialized mind, it can cause feelings of depression and psychosis. It can also cause hearing loss and brain damage.

  21. don't listen to midnight odyssey says:

two hours of drawn out two riff songs plus constant hangar reverb on all instruments, headache

  22. otto dix says:

Two not mentioned are Craft and Ravencult. I have yet to listen to these, but I’ll have to.

Also, Disma is top 3 for me.

  23. it's been a shitty year as far as I'm concerned, still waiting for new Demoncy says:

New Craft sucks, it’s even worse than the old one.

  24. NV says:

Actually the only reply I wrote so far was as “BOUNCE”. Blind Guardian was 2010. I haven’t listened to much 2011 metal, there’s a bunch of albums I might want to hear later (Pagan’s Mind, Stormwarrior, Emerald Sun, Amorphis, Korpiklaani, Arkona, etc.), definitely none of the shit bands mentioned by you guys so far. New Falconer and new Rhapsody were disappointing. So yeah, best metal this year… probably this:

  25. lol says:

    >2011
    >still listening to metal

  26. Improved conservationist says:

M83, Bon Iver, St Vincent, Big K.r.i.t. & Drake

  27. derp says:

lol who actually listens to Korpiklaani and new Amorphis? Manchildren, that’s who.

  28. Vajazzle Prosack says:

AUTOPSY feels like it was recorded in a hurry, or that they wrote it in first-take-best-take and never went back to fix it up.

DISMA has a lot of potential but is both too linear in riff/melody and without much actual song development. The demo was better; the album is rushed.

BEHERIT is really good but 20 years old. Do I give a fuck? It’s really good.

CIANIDE is awesome although it loses focus in a couple spots. It feels like it was recorded as songs in bits and pieces. These guys need to stop having lives and get back to metal. \m/

BLASPHERIAN is fucking great. It never tries to be anything but what it is, and doesn’t push past its limits, and so delivers great simple old school death metal. No wizardry. Love it.

REVENGE is boring and has always been boring. Motivational rhythm. It’s great exercise music. It misses the additional dimension. It’s a lot like ANGELCORPSE: occasional glimpses of pure power, then back into the rumbling murmur. Stupid.Fucking.Titles too.

BURZUM is an embarrassment to all metal. Racists who make genius music are great; racists who make bad cheesy music just reek of fail. Also, fuck racism. Just be nationalist/conservative instead. You’ll thank me for not encouraging you to ruin your life running with idiots.

BLUT AUS NORD has always been meh. I have tried to like this for 10,000 dog years but all of their albums are really obvious and boxy, like HADES or ACHERON. If you like that sort of thing… I do when ACHERON does it.

PROSANCTUS INFERI keeps getting more organized and losing the chaotic stuff that sounds like they’re filling in the giant cracks between points where the songs made sense.

The DESTROYER 666 was good if retro-nostalgia, but outside of SLAUGHTER LORD I generally find Australian metal to lack anything but pure rhythm music. Pure shit noise. Bores me to tears. I keep trying because Australians are pretty awesome.

AMORPHIS have been dead for years. This new stuff is reeking candy-ass narcissism that is painful to observe. What happened? LULU is better than this.

  29. Revenge of the nerds says:

    My favourite Revenge is Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat

  30. observer says:

From the names that keep popping up, why does it seem that you guys only listened to the shittiest, bottom of the barrell in new metal? Why even acknowledge, let alone put so much focus on irrelevant, terrible bands like Cianide, Blaspherian, fucking Bahimiron? I could have told you Cianide’s album sucked ass without even having to listen to it.

  31. Vajazzle Prosack says:

Feel free to name better bands.

  32. aspic activism. says:

Don’t forget mr Vajazzle, ARGHOSLENT has an onslaught in the works as well!

  33. dutchman says:

    1. The Crevices Below – Below The Crevices
    2. Esoteric – Paragon of Dissonance
    3. Petrychor – Effigies and Epitaphs
    4. Wolves in the Throne Room – Celestial Lineage
    5. Isole – Born From Shadows
    6. Mitochondrion – Parasignosis
    7. Negative Plane – Stained Glass Revelations
    8. Dornenreich – Flammentriebe
    9. Antediluvian – Through The Cervix of Hawwah
    10. Thy Catafalque – Rengeteg
