Deceased – Thrash Times at Ridgemont High (2021)

Deceased and Doomstone, like Motörhead, represent a certain spirit in metal that combines enthusiasm and cynicism, although Doomstone tends more toward the imaginative early heavy metal era that wrote about goblins, witches, UFOs, and ancient gods. This album compiles some well-executed covers from bands that I mostly care little about.

There we have it, in bald prose: these are good covers, and this is a good compilation, if you love speed metal on the side of heavy metal and popular punk. Deceased as always demonstrate mastery of their instruments and a delightful indulgence in exploring the idiosyncrasies of the original bands. Their previous covers albums — Zombie Hymns (2002), Rotten to the Core (2004), Cadaver Traditions (2015), and Rotten to the Core Part 2 (The Nightmare Continues) (2020) — showed this as well.

Standouts here are the Voivod, Sacrifice, and Rigor Mortis covers, which like the cover on The Thirteen Frightened Souls (1992), show great care taken to bring out the spirit in this song and even punch up the pace a bit. But for the most part, the originals on this album put me to sleep the first time, and continue to feel like something best left in the 1980s.

  1. Too much pizza in the speed metal says:

Hopefully King Fowley is vaxxed and/or practices good hand hygiene. We’ve lost too many unhealthy musicians to covid already

Damn, I didn’t know it could cause diabetes and alcohol induced liver failure.

      1. You jest, but one theory that makes a lot of sense is that almost all of our modern maladies are varieties of diabetes or secondary effects of it. Man says to nature, “I’m in control now!” and Nature says, “LOL, and you get a grave, and you, and you…”

  2. T Malm says:

Yup, pretty much. King’s boundless enthusiasm spills over onto songs you weren’t revisiting anyway.
