The hipster takeover of metal

Whenever NPR gets involved, you know you’re listening to state-sponsored propaganda. They also tend to favor any topic that humbles the strong and caters to the weak of spirit.

NPR’s favorite “metal” albums of 2011

Other than a few honorable mentions, there are no metal albums here. Only the indie, post-rock, punk, sludge, emo and shoegaze mixture that is popularly infused with a few metallish riffs to become the non-mainstream form of nu-metal.

    woah man i can totally get into that in an ironic fashion.

    try and stop me.

  2. 8===> says:

    Slayer isn’t metal because they have liberal punk rock influences.

    I can be stupid too.

  3. I would really like to know says:

    Hey Brett, tell us who the honorable mentions are.

    lol, have you even listened to any of those bands? YOB is heavy as a nigger, you’re absolutely clueless. I bet if your shitty site existed when black metal came out you would have whined about how it’s limpwristed wishy washy noise and “not metal” but shoegaze or some shit. Oh, and not to mention they somehow have Disma and Autopsy at you, big lol @ you and your secret affinity for hipster metal.

    Thanks though for promoting some good music on this shipwreck of a site, for a change!

    The degree of butthurt on these comments here is hilarious. People don’t like to be told that their sanitized wishywashy art metal is not in fact christraping black metal. There is a reason why it’s called black metal– because it’s dark and hateful. It celebrates torture, rape, murder and theistic satanism as well as anticosmic themes which are the antithesis of commercial.

    I give it two years before the DeviantArt kids have moved on. Probably bands like God Module will become very popular.

    Then, the NPR tourists will cease to find anything interesting to gawk at and they will leave our halls for fresh air and a shower to wash off the smell of stale beer. Wine and cheese parties are where they belong.

    I also don’t think that there’s anything wrong with what’s going on. It’s just that we’ve been noticed. It’s not as if NPR or their listeners, or any of the hipster shrinking violets, are relevant to us in any way. Annoying, yes, when they try to foist themselves into our communities, but again this is a short-lived fad and will last about as long as funk metal did. These fads always seem huge because of their mass-market appeal but they never last. Even tough-guy music (Pantera etc) and deathcore have jumped the shark and are entering senescence as their band members have been promoted to assistant manager down at the gas station and need to devote more time to work.

    The same will happen with the art fags. Trust me, it won’t last.
