From that interstitial and liminal period between speed metal and death metal, bands like Possessed and Merciless emerged long ago, but the tradition carries on with high-speed contrast and vertigo from Ripper.
Frenzied riffing fits in mostly circular songs with layers and lots of breaks between transitional riffs that do not so much temporize as offer precipices between inertia and radical change, giving the sense of an unfolding topography where the expected becomes the alien and the oppositional subsumes the norm.
Speed metal fanatics will find too much tremolo picking, and death metal fanatics too much bounce, but in the end, this album delivers straightforward metal anticipation and inversion of the normal, delivering a surreal world of conflict and usurpation.

Early Necrophobic is possibly my favorite band of all time. It’s a perfect synthesis of all good musical influences imagineable, transcending both death and black metal and becoming its own thing.
Funny how it, the second Therion, and Sacramentum converge on the same basic idea. It was nascent in that Carnage album too.

This type of speed/death/black hybrid always starts off strong but fails to retain attention and devolves into background noise 3 songs in. Bands like Anal Vomit and Terrorhammer are good examples

Ripper is pretty straightforward old school style and it’s not bad, but we’ve all heard a better version of it. I’d catch these guys live for sure though.
