Now, we see more evidence for this from a fifty-year-old tin of “Old English Curve Cut,” which reads:
Roll one slice between your hands. Pack it in pipe bowl level with top. Light evenly all the tobacco exposed. Draw through pipe as naturally as you breathe, not harder. Clean out pipe when through smoking and you will always have a dry clean “sweet” pipe and enjoy smoking.
The key line of course appears with “Draw through pipe as naturally as you breathe, not harder.” In other words, breath smoke, breathing through the pipe and not drawing “harder” or sucking on the pipe. This keeps the tobacco smoldering at a low temperature and imparts the greatest degree of flavor.
