Cool episode. The host is very good at what he does in terms of dishing out mic time in a measured way.

One thing that surprised me is that Suffocation didn’t come up in the conversation. They must not have been relevant to the theme of the episode for the guests, or maybe they were simply overlooked. No big issue – just kinda surprising.

Speaking for myself, while I enjoy Suffocation, none of their albums caused me to change how I think about metal or music as a whole. In terms of quality, I’d put “Effigy of the Forgotten” above four of the five albums I listed, but this wasn’t “your favorite five albums” but “five perspective changing albums”.

      1. They were massive important, historically speaking, and I enjoy their music when I hear it but have not been reaching for it lately much. This probably means nothing since my listening cycles over time with some bands. However, it should be mentioned that because percussive death metal is sort of the furthest extension of the speed metal idea of songs based around the power of the muted strum, that technique could easily become overdominant in songwriting, like it did with all of the Suffocation clone bands.

Or maybe you just gravitate toward death metal that reflects your state of mind… I mean Occam would agree with me and so would Hanlon.

This is topical for me as I revisited Pierced from Within for the first time in at least five years, last week. I now firmly consider this their best work, the arrangements are excellent and they really reached far beyond the knuckle dragging slam aesthetic that the band is tarnished with by the scene they influenced.
