Century Media Records has recently re-issued the death metal classics Obscura and From Wisdom to Hate by Canadian band Gorguts. The 2015 editions of these records were created in close cooperation with guitarist and songwriter Luc Lemay, who describes the history and context of these releases in accompanying liner notes. The re-issues are dedicated to the memory of former members Steeve Hurdle (R.I.P. 2012) and Steve MacDonald (R.I.P. 2002).

FWtH has some of the shittiest cover “art” ever. Probably the bands’ best album but holy cow, that’s terrible. How do things like that happen? Nobody involved in the selection and distribution of that image had second thoughts about it? The mind boggles.

Well, there’s no accounting for taste.

You make depressed photoshop golem head cry.

Obscura is… a lot of things…–specifics can be seen on the DLA– but I believe it’s best seen through the lens of its effects on my person: First and foremost, it raped my face, sodomized me manically, and left me loose and unfit for enjoyment. It took me about a month of frustrated listening to “get it”–that strange esoteric process whereby one makes sense of just… thunderous abruptly shifting sound. But goddamn it–I did. And there is sense to be had in it, comrades.

Nevertheless, I must confess it’s about the peak of what I can enjoy in terms of complexity; I don’t think I could never dedicate myself to enjoying something like that ever again. And I don’t actually: I don’t listen to the modern tech-death because, contrary to the views that many ’round these parts hold of it being shite, for me it’s simply because Obscura had its way with me in such vile fashion that I am deaf to all other advances. It’s like eating the best cheesecake ever, and as a result no other cheesecake holds a candle to it, and you’re left without interest in all other cheesecakes. Or, to give another example that appeals to our base impulses, if you become obsessed by the curvature and shadow of some whore’s humid anal cavity, and you can’t see past that swampy, humid ass to the nectar of other asses… etc.

Luc Lemay took my man-flower with Obscura, and while release I had, I can never dedicate myself to enjoying such a thing again–regardless of whether such a thing were to ever be made again–the mental work required (for me) was just too goddamned draining; for due to it, I neglected my frenetic masturbation routine.

And Faps away, my friends… faps away.
