Nils “Nisse” Joel Karlén (1974-2025)

We remember the fallen to celebrate what they strived to do because this embodies their spirit, and in some intuitive way we see spirit as the force that animates flesh. In this mindset we commemorate the life of Nils “Nisse” Joel Karlén, who passed away recently.

The band offers the following comment:

With deep sorrow, we share the heartbreaking news that our dear friend, band member, and one of the founders of Sacramentum, Nisse Karlén, has passed away. He chose to leave this world due to struggles with mental health.

At this time, we kindly ask for privacy for his family, friends, and bandmates as we come to terms with this loss.

Thank you for everything, Nisse. You will always be with us.

Suicide is never to be glorified.

  1. SERIOUS QUESTIONER says:

    Hello Brett:

In your opinion, what made the music of Sacramentum superior to bands like Dissection, Gates of Ishtar, Eucharist, and the like?

Would you say that after Far Away From the Sun they sold out?

    Sincerely,

    SERIOUS QUESTIONER

    1. Kill The Pigs says:

What percentage of Generation X has to kill itself before we admit that Baby Boomers were individualistic subhumans? Gas the fuckers.

    2. NOT BRETT says:

Dissection is gay pop music, but I think Eucharist’s first album beats everything released by Sacramentum.

      1. Mastodon Guy says:

Sacramentum entire discography was better than anything Eucharist put out, but the first Eucharist is still great melodic metal album..

  2. Nathaire says:

    Nice of you, man.
    RIP Nisse
    Hails

  3. PPT says:

Dang, that totally fucking sucks a big fucking dick. His band was definitely monumental to me and probably everybody else on this site. Super fucking sad to hear this. Thanks for the great tunes amigo!

  4. Mastodon Guy says:

Damn. I just saw them live not too long ago. We lost a legend for sure.

    1. tiny midget says:

Mastodon Guy, go away, you belong far away from this sun

Mastodon is music for faggots, specially the first two records,,, I’d rather listen to Mickey Mouse tunes in one of those plastic record players with plastic records

      1. Larry Fungicide says:

        So you’ve listened to Mastodon?

        1. I Dream Of Freedom Just Me And My Li'l Machine Gun says:

You poor product people do not realize: you are going to have to exterminate the bureaucrats, Christians, patriots, diversity, poors, and security forces. They will oppose you until the end and you will not be free until they are dead.

  5. Cynical says:

I know it’s selfish to lament that we’ll never get the new album that they were working on (they planned to enter the studio at the end of the year) in the face of a great guy dying, but not getting that new Sacramentum album really does add some salt to this one.

    1. Infinite Sadness says:

It’s just sad all around. Good guy dies, album delayed, band members horrified. How many victims of the insanity of modern society before we revolt, exterminate the bureaucrats, and drive the diversity into the sea?

  6. Insane fagfest says:

While Far Away from the sun was a masterpiece from an objective standpoint, I’m finding the songwriting rather gay. The classical-based emo-goth songwriting was done better by Dissection, because at least it actually sounded bitter-sweet and less cute and upbeat like baroque music (which I kind of hate). There’s a reason why Dissection was more popular, and it ain’t herd mentality, sometimes the masses know better than the fake underground elitists. No disrespect to the guy though, it’s not like he was Chuck or anything.

To be honest I think I even prefer Lord Belial – Enter the moonlight gate. I’m going to give Far Away a 7/10, no more.

Also, after “Far Away”, the band made terrible music worse than heavy metal.

Another thing I’ve been meaning to say is the best thing Ozzy did was on his own band. “Ultimate Sin” and “Bark at the moon” sound way better than the overrated “Master of Reality” shit. Sometimes the “pop” approach is just better.

    1. Moe Lester says:

You think that’s edgy? How about Rangarok Arising Realm. The track 04. en verden av stein destroys anything Sacramencum having done.

        1. Anal rapist says:

You replied to a guy called “insane fagfest”. Godamnit, I thought you were smarter, even Brett didn’t fall for this trap…

          1. Analingus Notting Hill says:

Everyone here is an insane festival of metrosexuality

  7. med resistant AIDS says:

No, this is a faggot band that never got accepted for a reason. There’s plenty of good Swedish alternatives out there (Dismember, Necrophobic, and even early Dark funeral).

Sorry, I sorry refuse to dress up as John Malkovich

    1. med resistant AIDS says:

Tell me about it, I’ve had more fun with early Limbonic Art albums, than this pretentious baroque crap.

      1. Troll Educator says:

You forgot to change usernames when making a post to agree with yourself to make it look like there was some consensus.

        1. Jesus Was a Black Gay Transgender says:

Either that, or it’s two guys using the same username. Ask Bert if the IPs match.

          1. med resistant AIDS says:

No, it was intentional, I enjoy being a retard.

            1. Retards are the ultimate constituency.

      2. PPT says:

This guy name dropped Limbonic Art like they had something to add to this conversation. Tartaros was better bro. You should try Aneroxia Nervosa Drudenhaus omg it’s brutal!
I wonder if Mastodon Guy likes Limbonic Art?

        1. People are always looking for the “lost” pure experience. In reality, everything got checked out pretty thoroughly and the diamonds in the rough need polishing.

          1. Reichs und Nationalfag says:

Yeah the first couple albums from slayer, morbid angel and deicide probably constitute half of my metal listening habits for a couple of years having spent 15 years internalizing the DLA basically. Oh yeah and horrified

Behemoth – …From the Pagan Vastlands
              Emperor/Enslaved – Split

              1. 666 says:

A fine selection. I’ve been on a retaliation/age of quarrel kick

              2. I, Observer says:

This is a pretty solid list.Outside of Frost by Enslaved (which was redundant, tiresome Vikang worship—Yggdrasill, Hordanes Land, and Vikingligr Veldi are all I need from them), your picks are mandatory listening. I would perhaps add Nespithe, Beyond Sanctorum and Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas (they started getting a little fruity here, but it’s still a rewarding listen).

                1. Brett activity update says:

Surprised blood isn’t on here but Brett is probably busy typing something else right now

                  1. I have a separate grindcore, punk, thrash, and some black metal list with lots of Blood, DRI, Exploited, Skrewdriver, Cryptic Slaughter, Napalm Death, and Ildjarn.

                  2. I, Observer says:

Hey there, pardon the delayed reply. Blood would have been another welcome entry to an already brilliant list. Then again, I must confess that I have a soft spot for Blood. Impulse to Destroy may be their magnum opus, but I haven’t heard anything from them that I haven’t liked. In that regard, they occupy rarefied air, since I can’t say the same for most bands.

                    1. I must weigh in for O Agios Pethane but I listen to Impulse to Destroy regularly.

                2. I felt this way some time ago, but Frost won me over. The two albums you mentioned have a… sacred nature for me… and are listened to only alone, deliberately, from CD. No MP3 playlists for those.

                  1. I, Observer says:

I’m sorry, but which two are you referring to exactly? I’m not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I mentioned more than two albums, so I’m kinda lost. It’s cool to know we park our cars in the same garage (well sorta, since I still think Frost is a dud ;)).

                    1. Nespithe and Beyond Sanctorum. Both have a special place and I usually play them off CD. I also have a metal MP3 stack which sometimes rolls over if I get called off to do something else.

I hope my IQ is beneath 80, I want to beat everyone here at losing.

      1. Sodomiak says:

Well spoke! I’d take Happy Gilmore over that horrendous 2025 Naked Gun “reboot”.

Oh, now they’re sorry, too late.

      2. curio says:

It shouldn’t be too difficult for you shave off a few IQ points. Just consume more Netflix and Cowboys from Hell or Power Metal for sodomy points.

        1. Vlcer says:

Power metal is a good album limp dick

          1. curio says:

Power Metal is synonymous with limp dick or flamin’ homosexual depending on the fan.

Say what you want about me, but I cannot have you belittling the internationally recognized Malcom X College where I earned a PhD in Afro Studies and served as the exalted treasurer of the Malt Liquor Tasting Association. Such refined and sophisticated culture as the 40 is lost on you white bois. Aieght..?..!

            2. I find it, like speed metal, to be busy and simplistic most of the time but I can see the appeal.

  9. Chinese water torture says:

What would you choose to live without in the world?

    A) Walter White’s brand of Classic Coke (TM)

    B) Your right hand

    C) Your enemies

  10. Gay Faggot says:

Sacramentum nailed it… Black Metal’s message is all about expressing and unleashing your inner faggot

  11. I, Observer says:

Mental health is a serious business that people need to tend to accordingly. I spun Finus Malorum and Far Away from the Sun in his memory. R.I.P. Nisse Karlen

  12. Brett Lover says:

At least Brett has turned out to be my favorite Leftist. He allows us to take dumps and drunken trolls to his face and he just puts up with it in a Christ-like manner. The whole Far Right thing is a facade. The man is such a sweetheart.

Now I can finally freely express myself and take that transgender surgery I’ve been planning for some time… in true black metal fashion.

    1. Sweet. I am both culturally a progressive and spiritually an extremist conservative, meaning that I like kings, ethnat, eugenics, and a spiritual center to existence. Mine is just more Druidic than Christian.

    2. “I’m inclined to reserve all judgements, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores.”

  13. Reluctant Swede says:

Why is Swedish “extreme” metal so fucking cheesy all the time? The only album from that place I can stand is Penetralia

    1. Slaughterlord says:

I’ve been playing Into The Grave non-stop. It gets slept on IMO. It’s simple but it’s as uncompromising as any Swedish album, Dark Recollections being its only rival in that dwpartment.

    2. Another great album, but “cheesy” applies generally to rock and pop, meaning obvious and emotional. Metal has less of it but the Swedes love a good melody and rousing return to theme.

    3. Cranking it now. This was one of my go-to albums back in the day.

This, Dismember, first Therion, and that great first At the Gates (after which you can stop listening to the band).

  14. Hessian Murderer of Black Death says:

Suicide is generally not a good death, but it is understandable that people choose it in this day and age

    1. Flying Kites says:

Yeah, better to ride it out like an induced infection or bleeding out. Slip into the fever dream.

      1. Of sodomy

        For all time

        1. Flying Kites says:

Takes some getting used to getting used to some taking!

        2. APPROVATOR REX says:

Brett, this is simultaneously the most beautiful and the most revealing thing you have ever tapped out on a keyboard. Brave. On a similar note, wasn’t that Sacramentum guy a fag?

          1. Stunning and brave! No idea who’s a fag, also don’t care. Sorry!

          2. Cynical says:

Given that he was married to a woman and had children, I doubt it.

  15. quizmaster says:

This reminds me that I never felt suicidal while listening to mandatory suicide by Slayer. Must be my lifeline.
