The current chatter in the underground surrounds the controversial Metal Threat Festival, which took place in Chicago, October 2-5, with a slew of international underground acts. It drew plenty of attention for its dream lineup and the rash of cancellations that followed, as many bands were denied their US visas just weeks ahead of the show. The promoter doubled down on controversy a few weeks before the event by adding the American band Arghoslent as an initially unnamed headliner.

World Terrorizers: A Tribute to “World Downfall” (2021)

Bands do cover songs to learn from them, to show their ability to nail it as well as the original, and to expand upon what have become classics of the metal culture. It is one thing to play a song, and another to deconstruct it, analyze it, and reassemble it to show an understanding of it.

Brain Corrosion / Ripped to Shreds – Exhumed From Eastern Tombs (2020)

This split album showcases high intensity grindcore and old school death metal with a speed metal pace, with Brain Corrosion demonstrating an inventive approach toward varying conventional grindcore patterns and working in touches of melody, while Ripped to Shreds sounds like Nunslaughter executed by Slaughter Lord, using a high-energy approach to a crossover between traditional heavy metal and fast death metal.
